I understand he was the best player in the world at the time, with the signing Trinity will will have well been under the spotlight and the attendances improved. I didn’t know until yesterday that his wages were paid by a businessman so I’m presuming Trinity will have seen the full benefit of higher attendances.
But why do we still have him coming over 35 years later with his name in lights now? We have players who have done just as much if not more who won’t even get a mention.
IMO he might of been the best player at the time but there was certainly no major success on the field that came from the signing.'"
I recently had the honour of playing against Paul Gallen, a chance I won’t get again, he never played for Wakey but in my eyes was a one of the greats of the game and many came to his speaking appearances. What people I think are trying to say is That Wally not only was also a great of the game but also played for Wakey and was a huge attraction at the time and wether he played for us or not, RL fans would turn out to listen to what he has to say like they would with any RL legend . I don’t know what age bracket you are in dreadnought, but if you had watched him in the flesh I’m sure your opinion would change.

I won’t disclose my age lad but fair comment, maybe it’d be different.

| Quote ="TheDreadnought"Just the fact that people still talk about him and want to make a big deal of someone who did so little for us, I don't have a problem with anyone showing him respect. He deserves respect, he was the best player in the world at the time.

Ah ok. I was right. You don't get it.
You could have just asked us why we are bothered. I thought you wanted to praise someone else instead or felt some principle about someone spending money on him. In fact it seems you are just arguing for the sake of it. Disappointed now.
I don't know why people are bothered about Babe Ruth as I never saw him play and haven't really even seen him on video but people hold him in high regard so they must have a good reason. I'm unlikely to go on a Dodgers forum and challenge their opinion as I have no basis to challenge them.
It seems you didn't see him play for Wakefield. Don't know the players he played with or against, don't know the history of the team at that time, yet feel you can challenge the opinions of those that do.
We are very different people.

The thing is that you didn’t see him play - imagine messi at his peak coming to play for Doncaster rovers. Coming and literally knocking himself unconscious he played with what was largely a team of pygmies and he strode like a colossus.
He was undoubtedly the most talented player to pull on a trinity shirt in the last 45 years. I include both David Solomona and Neil fox in that. He could have just taken the money and shown his face but he put his all in. We played Halifax I think and at half time was carried from the field, undoubtedly suffering from concussion he came back out in the second half looking like an extra from the Arabian nights.
In a period when the team and club were pretty dire he was fantastic.

Don’t be so hypocritical, I haven’t once challenged anyone’s opinion Poptart, I’ve posted my own but I’m questioned by everyone else for holding it?
I’m not arguing for the sake of it, initially I did see it as a waste of money but then I was corrected when it was confirmed his wages were paid by a local fan. I accepted this on a few occasions when replying to others.
Read my comments back, i think it’s clear I think there are others that are more deserving, I named someone who played in the same era yet you shut me down stating he was injured most the year, I wasn’t meaning the 83/84 season specifically, only the era in which they both played... late 70’s/early 80’s.
Do I not hold the right to post my opinion on a rugby forum if I didn’t see the guy play for Wakefield?

| I can only add that seeing Wally Lewis play those games for Trinity ( I even went up to Whitehaven and got his autograph after his last game at Halifax), was as thrilling as seeing Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones for first time.

Agree, again it’s normal for fans of any sport to see the best there is strutting their stuff and some have had the luxury including myself due to my age the youth of today are fortunate that in the future the quality of recordings will be better than what they are now, by the way George Best was my hero growing up and had the pleasure of watching

He played for the Yankees predominately mate, Dodgers back then were the other New York team, unless I misunderstood.

You are correct. I knew I should have checked that. I could remember seeing his name on shirts when I went in the team shops in New York but couldn't remember which one it was.
Kinda proves the point. I don't know the details well enough to comment.

Another hypocritical comment, whether I know the details more than anyone else on here or not my opinion is my opinion so as per your own words I shouldn't be challenged on them

Brooklyn Dodgers {So called because the people of Brooklyn were quite adept at dodging in and out of the street cars (trams).at that time}, and the franchise was then transferred over to Los Angeles.
