While it is quiet may I offer an opinion - after firstly suggesting that Dr Koukash, despite stating after the television deal was agreed that 'You don't marry the first girl you meet',did seem to offer Brian Noble the head coach position without interviewing anyone else.I would guess that 'figures at the RFL' suggested Brian Noble to him.
In the case of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats would I be correct in thinking that you require a temporary motivator and the same person who can nurture young players over the coming seasons?
Whomever it was who suggested telephoning Daniel Anderson and Mick Potter, and seeking their advice, may have called it absolutely correctly.
Good luck...

| Quote ="vastman"FWIW I don't want an Aussie coach. I don't think they are right for a club like ours, certainly not those straight off the plane. I'm not doubting their ability, far from it. However there are similarities between NRL clubs and the likes of Wigan and Leeds. There are no similarities between Wakefield and the NRL. I'm afraid and I feel the culture shock would take more time to get over than there is time available. I'll make an exception with Woods because he has done his time so to speak.
The beauty of a local British coach is they know the ropes and they actually know the players rather than their stats etc. Someone like Andy Kelly or JK will have been monitoring some players since they were 10 years old and they know what sort of players and individuals they are - they don't need the opinions of other possibly more biased people. They are not necessarily better coached just better coaches for the position we are in.
In the short term it's buy British for me.'"
I 100% agree, and by looks of it, so do the SL chairmen. There's only 1 Aussie head coach left in Super league and he has been over here for donkeys. Quite the change from years gone by.
Brits know our game and know our players.

Wouldn't say a good friend !!
Just thought this market might be one to have a go at considering the number of people who know what goes on at the club !

| I agree with Vasty that an Aussie coach who doesn't know the players and where we've been going wrong isn't the short term fix we need. Having said that, if Brian Smith is in the frame, and the bookies are seldom wrong, that would be impressive. A coach with real calibre who has coached in this country before so won't have the accompanying culture shock. He will know what he's getting. If the players can't respond to someone like him, we've no hope.

Two to six all seem like good choices. Monaghan is a curious one. Has played under a very good coach but not been part of the coaching set-up with one, so not clear whether he can bring any great methods. And would anyone give up a good number in the south of france to risk everything on a basket case like us?

| Smith's son Keegan is also the strength and power coach at the Roosters
and other son Rohan is a coach who has worked as his assistant twice and coached the Tongan team.
Ready made team to bring over too.

and he would have a good idea of the workings of the club, including the culture etc from his brother and the Richard Agar connection - if, as you say, he is in the 'frame'.

| I'd even take him as a short term consultancy till the end of the season to show Carter what he needs.
He can be part of the recruitment process too.

They do have mobile/wifi reception in Portugal, Voice/Skype/FaceTime, same as it would be here.
No Aussie is gonna fly over for an interview and we could not afford travel expenses

This might be the best bet if it is to be him. Smiths last RL job was at the Roosters (who are the NRL team i follow) where he started off well getting them to the grand final in 2010 but in the following two years they got progressively worse and worse and were a bit of a basket case when the sacked him at the end of the 2012 season. Trent Robinson took over for the following season, sorted out the recruitment and put new structures in place and they finished top and won the grand final. Smith certainly has the past record and he could work as a short term fix but i would be wary about going with him long term. Personally i would also go down the british coach route, or at least British based.

I think they may have had a say in Websters appointment (at least the ones who were here last season) and look where that got us.

Ohhh ok that's interesting, just wondered if anyone knew of it actually playing a part in building a successful club/team somewhere else, given the fact that they are the ones who are actually playing under him etc, and if it's a majority that do want a particular person, then it all goes t**s up, then they've only got themselves to blame!

If Bobby Goulding gets the job Id have to gouge it out with a blunt screwdriver

| I'm looking at this in a terribly simplistic way, I'm guessing our new coach might be an Aussie/Kiwi, if we were gonna appoint a British coach it wouldn't take another "5 days" (quoting MC on Twitter here)to sign him up, the only way it could drag on for nearly two weeks is if he's to travel over for a press conference.

That would be up to MC.
If he values the opinion of a couple of the senior players then, why wouldn't he run a couple of names past them, especially if certain players have worked with said coach(s) in the past.
There's nothing wrong with taking somebody's opinion.
It seems reasonable for any club chairman to take some input from the senior players when appointing a new head coach.
