I think SOL is immense, he has been and absolutely fantastic player - he still is but just not for as long at a time. You only have to look at the way he improves Wigan when on the park. They know the value of him and do everything to get him on the park at crucial times of the season, wrapping him in cotton wool nowadays. I get the impression he is a phenomenal influence on his teammates and his presence produces an extra 5-10% out of his peers.

Along with Roby, been the stand out performer in SL over the last 6-7 years or so for me (when fit).

Opinions differ but not for me. One thing I do know is that the Aussies don’t rate him and never have and they know a thing or too.

Tell me of one international game where he stood out? That’s where I judge true quality. I’ve watched them all and the answer is none - anonymous in every game.

Also ever wondered why Farrell never took him to Union for mega bucks? Me too.

When you say 'the Aussies' I'm going to take that to able to be able to make such a sweeping statement on behalf of Australia and its people you must have being able to gain that insight by one if not all of the below:

You flew to Australia and did a match exit questionnaire to all the NRL clubs over a year period asking the question

Do you rate SO? Answer Yes or no

Upon completion of your year long survey you interviewed each NRL player asking the same question

Finally you held open forums with the media asking them, do you rate SO?

if you didn't do one of the above then your statement that the Aussies don't rate SO is just you making that statement off your own back and has no factual reality whatsoever, pretty much what you do every day on here

I'd bet there would have been a lot more positivity around a rumour that we were signing OLoughlin than Brough. When fit I'd have him on the pitch against the Aussies every time. For some time I've thought if money were no object he's be the ideally captain to build any team around.

The one thing I admire about SOL is how he manages to gear his team up for the big games. Other than that he's a cheap shot thug made of biscuit.

Well O’Loughlin has been a very good player for a number of seasons, despite his on-field discipline issues, but one who now is way past his best and no longer anywhere near as influential as he was. So the parallels with Brough are quite apt there.

The difference is that whilst SoL has been a good ambassador for the sport off the field and an excellent leader for Wigan and his country Brough has been the exact opposite and his petulance and immaturity show no sign of changing.

O'Loughlin may have been a good ambassador off the pitch, I really don't think he's up there with the best on the pitch, certainly not at international level. I think James Graham would be a lot better leader, leaving someone else to cover LF, who doesn't frequently use cheap shots to down an opponent.

I was more thinking at club level to be honest, i agree that on the international stage he's been much more than adequate and he should have retired a couple of years ago. He has still acheived more than Brough ever did at that level though.

I can't see how anyone can describe SoL as anything other than a great player - when he is on the pitch, Wigan are several levels better; I don't view him how I view Roby though, because of his nasty antics - he's very talented, but he's also a grub and a cheap shot merchant.

Anyway - Brough - still a rumour!

If he signs he signs, and if he does hopefully he will mature over the next few months and be an asset to the team.

A very gifted player who has a last chance to grow up and put something into the game he has taken so much from.
