| In the 80s it was mad up town, gangs of lads from differant areas of Wakey fighting each other, the Geordies turning up every week + football lads stopping off no cctv it was barmy I think there was a programme even then labeling Wakefield the most violent City in England. The young ones have it easy up town these days

It's true about midweek Peterborough and to be fair there is probably slightly more activity in Rugbyball's brain. On a weekend especially when Posh are at home, parts of the town are just like the top of westgate.

Absolutely true; you had to be on top of your game on a night out in those days - there were scraps breaking out all over the place. To make it worse, this was pre-licensing of bouncers, so they'd kick the bejesus out of people as readily as the drunken punters.
In respect of the Coppers programme; I've enjoyed some of it, but I don't think it's showed them in a particularly good light. The traffic ones in particular came across really badly, but then they always do.

| So, despite what the Wakey Express and the letters page will have you believe, Wakefield isn't perfect, never has been, and is arguably safer than once was. I hate people dragging the city down for made-up reasons (the murder that never was a month back for one.)

Certainly looked liked him; not just getting arrested, but behaving like a complete ar5e.
Once again though, annoying drunks or not, the coppers come out of it looking less than great.

Funny I had a bar on Westgate in the 80's and apart from a few very odd situations there wasn't much trouble, totally blown out of all proportions. Old wives tales. Also had four bars in Barnsley as well and in 10 years probably 3 call outs.
The problem between then and now is the type of alcohol consumed, smaller amounts now but higher abv not to mention the taste and also relatively speaking a lot cheaper now.I was probably retailing at an higher price late 80's than now. Plus all the later hours has done is instead of filter people out of the city it has kept them in the city so instead of like in the 70's,80's,90's where the pubs closed at 11pm and clubs 2am you had that natural respite, now it just mingles in and the whole city's not so loved up, all licensed premises are in effect the nightclubs of old. Add in the fact that you also have a load of tanked up people outside bars smoking and control goes out of the window and Westgate becomes a scene from Blade Runner with fat slags instead of robots
So no Wakefield wasn't barmy it was just a good and relatively safer night out. The copper tonight summed it up when he said you didn't answer the police back when he was younger, and you didn't. It's called respect.

| Personally speaking, I lost respect for the police during the miners strike - until the early 80's I had total respect for the police and would never say a word to them - then in 84 & 85 the attitude of the police to people changed from being caring police to being enforcers of the law with no common sense included.
Respect is a two way thing - treat people ok and generally they will treat you ok - it's a simple way that has worked well for me 99% of the time.
I think it is getting back that way but any police officer wondering what happend should look at those years and see what their predecessors did thus causing the loss of respect from many people since then.

| I was shocked by the lack of control shown by some of those on Westgate, pushing and swearing and shouting. And some members of the public were a bit out of order too.
Richard Moore was being daft, nothing more. You're entitled to be daft after a few cold ones. My only query is whether this was a Saturday night before a Sunday game. It would explain a lot if things about the season just gone.
