you mean just like us 'old f@rts' who used to watch Pentangle,Fairport Convention & Steeleye Span etc etc ? and even you have to admit that the folky/rocky/punky music of the Pogues is a bit special ?

| Quote ="sanjunien"Gillan started serious rock singing before Marriot (he as the original 'Jesus' in JC Superstar of I recall) though Marriott was a kind of child star of the early 60s but doing more middle of the road stuff.
If we are talking about early rockers then surely the likes of Buddy Holly & Little Richard and of course, The King must be taken into consideration ?'"
Really not sure you are getting my point. I'll put it another way. I'm not saying he was the best or the first to sing in a Rock fashion ever! However I think Tin soldier was the first real Rock song to go mainstream rather than an R&B hybrid which is what say Zepplin or Cream were. Despite some calling it an R&B song it clearly isn't, it's sung with no attempt to sound black or American it's just belted out and that to me is what 70's rock was in vocal terms - it's pure soft(ish) rock. I don't doubt Gillan has a better voice, certainly a wider range - I also know that Marriott had a tendency to go all music hall so wasn't really a pure rock singer. However I think it's the case that whether by design or accident the Small Faces produced a prototype rock sound that charted first. This was 1969, the same year Deep Purple started so it was close I'll give you that but I reckon they got it in the charts first.
Again I'm not sure you are with me. I'm talking rock singer - Soft rock - Hard rock - Heavy Metal etc etc all are different enough not to be R&R or R&B. Up until 1969-70 these styles didn't really exist in the mainstream. Up until that point you were either American Blues inspired (R&B) and it's British variant Jagger, Burden and even Plant - or - Country (Rock & Roll, Rockabilly etc) or it's British variant the Beatles, Dave Clark Five and of course Cliffy .Elvis and Buddy Holly were great singers but clearly Country inspired and not rock - Little Richard is an interesting one though but I think we can call him unique!
Nothing wrong with any of it but Marriott sang in his own voice which I think is why so many British singers site the Small Faces as an inspiration - they didn't invent Rock no one did but they contributed.
Anyways it's just opinion and theories and helps pass a boring day - certainly less controversial than talking Rugby

saw them live in Paris and they were really cr@p,IMO of course - I was expecting something like Uriah Heep or Sabbath but it was a bit of a let down.
agree with The Who but never saw Meatloaf so can't say.I don't mind their music though I do find it a bit 'samey',if you know what I mean ?
Saw The Quo recently and they were sensational,as good,if not better than in the 70s when I last saw them IMO

Great line. One of many.
I have all the soundtracks to the 'Dollars trilogy' and 'Once upon a time trilogy.' Every one of them are outstanding. A fistful of Dynamite sounds very early Floyd in parts.
Every scene in Once upon a time is just perfect, Leone tried to create an oil painting from every angle and the actors had the awe-inspiring soundtrack fired at them during the scenes to play off it.

There's a little bit of musical snobbery about that comment though. The reason they are so well known and so popular is that they are great songs, but because they are great songs they are played, and sold, often and that breeds contempt sometimes, especially by those with a deeper knowledge of music.
I agree that some of these songs are a little bit cliche'd, but I'm thankful that they exist and that they are known to a wider audience than the just the musically motivated and that even the relatively un-musical or un-educated (musically) have the chance to listen to them, enjoy them and perhaps become quizzical for more!

| Planet Rock reminds me of someones dull Dad playing the choicest cuts from his boring record collection; as good as some of their songs were, I can only listen to Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy annd Led Zep so many times before the Roberts Radio gets chucked against the wall.
I'm a 6 Music addict myself - keeps me company on looooong business journeys.

Best station is Radio 2 for me. A little bit for everyone. It's especially good at reminding you of certain bands/songs you'd forgotten and it's a real joy to discover them again. I also like the eclectic mix. I'm no metal fan like you but if I were listening to it all the time would do my nut in (not saying you do). On Radio 2 you'll hear Sabbath or whatever your into followed by Glenn Campbell and you will find you enjoyed hearing Glenn again even if you don't rush out and buy the record. Hell I even appreciate Human League a bit after a lifetime vendetta against them. Get rid of Jeremy Vine who is a total tw*t and you have perfection for me.
Can't stand Radio 1, limited playlist and the worst collection of limp, inane and dull DJ's ever collected under one roof. Never thought I'd say this but bring back the hairy cornflake.
