We could have done with him at FB, never mind as part of the coaching staff !
Although Richard Owen looked very good on Sunday

I didn't say Northern Pride would be a top Super League Team or compete with Wigan, Sts, Warrington, Leeds etc over the course of a season.
Trinity are at present are a Super League team and Northern Pride may well beat Trinity should they play each other with their current squads. JD is coaching at a comparable standard to Trinity's with players of similar ability and so may be a compelling candidate..

Not much long term succession planning going on there!'"
Although it falls under the umbrella of the Head Coach to bring the youngsters through, clubs like ours (perennial strugglers) will always be fighting for survival.
The Head Coach at Leeds, Wigan, Saints etc have the luxury of knowing that they will be competing in the top half of the comp whereas clubs like ours have to work on survival first and foremost and then see what's left.
It's not how it should be done but the necessity of staying in SL especially with ground issues etc. trumps all other requirements.
Licensing did take the pressure off this and we started to see some benefit with the likes of Walshaw and others coming through but, we then have to be able to compete to hold on to these players and inevitably most clubs have better spending power than Wakefield.
The return of promotion and relegation will see a return of the journeyman player merry-go-round and whilst there should be reward for the top club in the championship, the new system is not the answer (although as a Wakefield fan, I am pleased that we still have some chance of escaping the drop !).
Back to which coach we need, Kear would be my choice. So many of the others have massive amounts of risk attached to them.
Of course, there is no guarantee with Kear but he does have the right character and ability to keep us up (we hope)

| I'd agree Kear is the safest least controversial option.
Need a new conditioner though. As an additional thought on fitness of players as well remember Hickey Kear signed?

In fairness, we spent less than sod all on players that season.

| There's some good number 2s around, especially in Australia where some clubs have 2 Assistants.
Many coaches will see this as a perfect opportunity to put themselves in the shop window.
I think we will have some quality options to choose from.
I wonder if Nathan Brown, Daniel Anderson or Steve Price have applied?

| Some interesting names emerging, the attraction of waking this sleeping giant doesn't seem to be putting people off if what we're hearing is right. There's certainly plenty of experience in top level coaching and a few ex players fancying it too. Gonna be an interesting week next week.

| FWIW I don't want an Aussie coach. I don't think they are right for a club like ours, certainly not those straight off the plane. I'm not doubting their ability, far from it. However there are similarities between NRL clubs and the likes of Wigan and Leeds. There are no similarities between Wakefield and the NRL. I'm afraid and I feel the culture shock would take more time to get over than there is time available. I'll make an exception with Woods because he has done his time so to speak.
The beauty of a local British coach is they know the ropes and they actually know the players rather than their stats etc. Someone like Andy Kelly or JK will have been monitoring some players since they were 10 years old and they know what sort of players and individuals they are - they don't need the opinions of other possibly more biased people. They are not necessarily better coached just better coaches for the position we are in.
In the short term it's buy British for me.

| Wakefield the club should be making the most of the coaching situation. Press release regarding the number and quality of the applicants. Then a day or 2 days later a statement regarding interview and hope to call a press meeting. Then the introduction of the new coach. ( milk it )

I think you'll find PR is an alien word to Wakefield Trinity, and Rugby League in general.

Dr Koocash would have his media team working overtime on this one, especially if there are some promising unexpected candidates

| We had the PR in spades with Glover.......just needs to be balanced
I'm with you on the British thing Vasty. In the sense that they need to know what they are getting.
So Morrison, Woods and JD will all be fine, but a new coach from overseas would need a big infrastructure around them to get the best results and we just don't have that.
