I have to admire his honesty. In part this links to where I think there should be flexibility over the length of the ban. Clearly it is hard to say definitively until more details emerge, but I'm not sure if in balance there is more to be gained from essentially ending a career when his apologetic response and remorse could be channelled into a positive manner, e.g. 6 months ban if you do so much anti-drugs work for the RFL. Obviously it isn't as straightforward as that, or else some may willingly dope in the knowledge they can admit it all and plead clemency. I do though share the view of whomever it was who stated that a blanket ban of 2 years sits harshly compared to lighter criminal convictions for more serious offences.

I don't admire this "honesty bit" he's got no way out so he's put his hands up. Not really any choice in the mattter.

Agreed, the lad make a mistake, a very costly one for which he will dearly pay. It's regretful and should send a message to other pro players that eventually you will get caught.

For me, he's apologised, held his hands up and admitted his mistake. That'll do for me, we all make mistakes and should pay the penalty for which he will.

It's a real shame but these things do happen. Let's move on and concentrate on our future

I'm just relieved he's owned up now and spared the club and his team mates any further embarrassment. He'll have plenty of time to reflect on what he's done, but as others have said, we need to draw a line under it and move on.

To be fair to Newton his statement is an honest acknowledgement for what he has done. I much prefer his courage in accepting fault than the tennis players and RU types who do drugs and throw lots of expensive lawyers and fancy excuses to cover up their wrong doing.

Whatever you may think of Newton he was a dedicated and hard working professional who reached the top in his RL career. Hopefully people will let him be.

True, but there's at least a little bit of honesty in there. He'll get a 2 year ban, and that'll be the end of his career. In the end, it's his decision to take whatever he took, and now he faces the consequences.

We, as a sport, should be proud we catch these people and do not sweep them under the carpet and glad that the RFL is paying for blood testing to show up these 'cheats' to reduce the number getting away with it.

He's was good on Radio Leeds as he was a player. He's a referee now, imagine Mr. Newton as the man in the middle.

he isn't the only 1. he has admitted it and is taking the punishment..he could have carried the uncertainty on for another 8 weeks but at least he has come forward and i think that is his career over. shame because i was looking forward to the rest of the season with him in our ranks.

Sounds like you know nothing about performance enhancing drugs.

The vast majority help you train harder and have very little impact on actual performance. You still have to put the work in they dont just turn you into Scwarzenegger overnight.

A lot of sportsmen only take stuff like this to help them overcome injury quicker. Maybe he made a mistake and was just trying to recover pre season so that he could give his best to Wakey.

Either way we will never know.

But doesn't that mean that he can achieve a fitness level that he would otherwise not achieve? It means that he has an advantage that he otherwise would not have in a game where fitness is crucial.

mistake yes bet then its got so tight with what you can take, not take that even a flu / cold can give you positive reading for a banned substance

It is more that he can recover quicker . i think the positive test was out of season. All it would have done is get him ready for the season not given him an advantage in the season. The other option is that he would not have taken anything and may not have been ready for 3 or 4 games in. Who knows.

But Durham as you say it speeded up his recovery, others have to wait until they recover naturally, therefore gaining an unfair advantage, ie cheating, whether it be pre season or mid season it doesn't matter, he has taken a banned substance to gain an unfair advantage. He's held his hands up but in my opinion he had no other option, you can't argue with a blood test (its even more accurate than a lie detector test on the Jeremy Kyle show lol).
