| Quote ="financialtimes"Sorry been out of the country since last Tuesday so only just looked at the forums tonight after getting over jet lag.
But Mary Creagh has continuously come under some pretty unfair criticism and disgusting comments made towards her over her Brexit stance, but ever since the day she was first elected, she has made it absolutely clear she was against Brexit, she has stood her ground and not wavered from her position despite all the flack. This is a very rare occurance in a politician to actually tell the truth and stick to your guns, she has been re-elected twice based on this stance (once since the referendum). Having met her a number of times on the many various projects she has supported and helped out in the districts in the last 10 years, I can honestly say she regularly and consistently has done the best for the people of wakefield and the only thing she appears to have done wrong is not support Brexit, I didn't vote this time but that's my fault, but I have always voted for the person I felt best represented what was needed in our fair city and I would have voted for her again, not because she's labour or that's I love corbyn (couldn't be further from the truth) but people mistakenly think our voting system is presidential and we're voting for our favourite leader not the person who best represents us. I doubt our Tory MP will get another term, this was clearly a protest vote, Andrew we'll have another one in 5 years.
Personally I think there should be better rules on when you have an election, this one has been ridiculous with its timing, a strangle hold over one policy Brexit, getting completed by January. But we won't get the Brexit that was blasted on the side of the big red bus, it'll look nothing like that
'"
Ms Creagh was elected as Wakefield MP in 2005! Was Brexit on the table then? As regards Brexit the referendum was a straight choice leave or stay it was the duty of all MP's to stand by the result not go against democracy and decide that they know best, almost two thirds of the Wakefield electorate voted to leave the EU Ms Creagh's duty was to represent her constituents not her own views as she has now found out the electorate vote you in and also out.

Yes a referendum to leave the EU was being discussed in parliament In 2005, labour dismissed this whilst still in government
Secondly, no she doesn't have to represent her constituency, her first and foremost duty is to act in the best interest of her constituency and in her opinion (and the majority of MP's across all parties) staying in the EU was in the best interest of her constituents. She wasn't "found out" she was voted out on one policy, a policy she really had no control over, if people had took the time to look at the actions of our MP other than Brexit they would have seen a very hard working MP who was extremely active in the district who backed a number of local initiatives along with some very high profile national (and global) initiatives. Just a shame that the people of wakefield have such a small minded view of her and decided to teach her a lesson over one issue.

Couple of things' Scotland haven't accepted the result of their independence referendum, do you watch the news, the SNP leader has been demanding another referendum ever since the last one failed to give the result they wanted (sound familiar at all?)
Also if you have any understanding of the parliamentary process, you would know that the referendum was an "advisory" referendum, which means no party has to take it as an action to process. All that said it's a million miles away from what I was trying to discuss. But seems I was right about the "single policy" voting

| Serious question for those who supported the Conservatives:
What things do you think will have improved in the local area / country in 2024 compared to now, now there's a Conservative MP / Johnson government with Brexit?

| Hi Financialtimes...Re Mary Creagh -I've never met her and what you say about her I've no reason to disbelieve. It's true that on a lot of issues an MP doesn't know what the electorate wants and has to do what she/he thinks is best. The referendum was totally different. She knew exactly what we wanted by the fact that we voted 2 to 1 to leave. She decided that she knew best and ignored the vote. The rest is history.
As for not getting anything like the Brexit we expect, that may be true, but also we may get a lot more, but then nobody knows.

Stopping the current decline in the area will be a start.
It's a low benchmark.

I actually knew our new MP Imran Khan as a kid and his family were well known in the area with his dad being a Doctor. He's not been a life long Politician and has gone on to do really well with his life and actually done some impressive things as a terrorism expert working for the UN. I personally hope he can do well.

You do realise, the decline in the Wakefield area, has been down to the austerity measures of the conservative government? The cutbacks to our local council have been caused by the tories. Ironically, the only improvements to the north have been funded by the EU.

| The money received by the council in Wakefield from central government has reduced by 54% since 2010. I think this may limit what they can do and I doubt there will be little change even with the new MP who will not want to rock the boat with his party being such a new boy with little experience.
I wouldn’t bank on anything changing for the better over the next five years.

You do realise the decline in the Wakefield area began with the creation of the MDC back in the 70's and has been unrelenting regardless of who has been in charge at Westminster.

Well the sarcasm didn't land at all, probably because you were really reaching, usually an emoticon works wonders.
Not that I want to go over such boring old ground, but you have brought it up so all I'll say is - Ateotd Corbyn has been unbelievably wishy-washy about those years and it leads people to fill in the gaps, no matter what paper they read or any of that crap. When he won't even condemn the IRA on so many TV interviews etc and he stood for a minutes silence for eight IRA members killed by the SAS in Gibraltar and then when he unexpectedly rose to be leader of Labour, all he's said is a back tracking line of it was "for all who'd died" in Northern Ireland.

I don't think Jeremy Corbyn was showing sympathy for the terrorist actions of the IRA, no leader would empathise with that. It's more the sympathising with, and supporting, the CAUSE that they were fighting for, ie a United Ireland, and what is wrong with that? It's a legitimate cause. The United Kingdom isn't exactly snow-white when it comes to questionable military action is it?

| I was being ironic because if he had been a Labour MP how do you think the right wing press would deal with it. I note that the same papers make no reference to the influx of Britain first members joining the Conservative party because they like the way Johnson had spoken about minorities in the past.
So no I don’t think our current MP or you are terrorist sympathisers I was pointing out the hypocrisy of the press. To be able to end the troubles in Northern Ireland required the UK government to negotiate with terrorist organisations on both sides but produce peace. The problem with Corbyn is that he is actually a man of principal who abhors violence.

| Corbyn has done quite a bit to support the IRA, have a read up on George McLaughlin, supplier of radio controls to remotely detonate bombs and his partner and how they jumped to the top of Islington's housing list despite living in Wales, no dependent kids but they did have neighbours who had found out their 'background' so along comes Jezza
