%75 of challenges on Burrow make contact with his head at some point, the reasons are obvious. Ban every player that does this and most will be struggling to field 13 players the week after. If he runs straight at a big man he's gonna go down like a sack of tatties, simple !

Webb had his elbow raised in an attempted 'tackle'. Wilkes had his arms accross his chest protecting the ball against a guy thats 5 ft tall. Totally different

a bit shocked that wilkes got a ban to be honest, i'm also shocked (given the nature of the incident - late, high, forearm/elbow and his past record) that webb only got two!

Webb actually jumped in the air and put his elbow in into kirkmonds chin, You could argue that it was off the ball too as kirkmond had already kicked the ball

Verdict on Wilkes from tribunal -

The tribunal have viewed the DVD very carefully several times and are satisfied this was misconduct and find the player guilty. The tribunal believe that contact was avoidable and the appropriate tackling technique was not present. The tackling player has a duty of care to his opponent at all times and in the tribunals opinion on this occasion got it wrong. The tribunal are satisfied there was an element of recklessness but nothing intentional.

Verdict on Webb -

Having viewed the DVD this was a bad challenge where the shoulder/elbow of a player made contact with opponents head area. It was a reckless challenge and had the potential to cause serious injury as conceded by the players coach. The tribunal accept the refreshing and frank submissions made on behalf of the player and take into account the guilty plea. The player does not have a good previous disciplinary record. Taking into account all the circumstances this tribunal feel that a 2 match suspension and £300 fine is appropriate

I think these are both very reasonable summaries. I think Webb did absolutely deserve the maximum two matches for his offence. But equally I have to agree with the verdict on Wilkes in that there was still an element of recklessness, even though it was unintentional.

I think you should move on, the punishments don't look unreasonable on both counts to me and I think the balance looks right.

I think you might be right and the report system does allow ref's to take a soft option! The problem of the laws also not generally allowing for the use of a yellow card, other than for professional fouls, should be looked at again IMO. Silverwood has two choices with the Wilkes and Webb incidents according to the laws, penalty or penalty & red card... he doesn't have the choice of penalty & yellow and I think that the laws are wrong on this and that is why ref's take the cautious option of the report.

I still believe that Wilkes did nothing wrong beyond being a touch late - Burrow's injury happened because he ran into Wilkes chest at full pelt; there was no strike, no contact with the head beyond that which is physically impossible to avoid and no recklessness.

Appeal feels like the right thing to do, although I'd be surprised if we get any change out of them.

Thought a late challenge on a kicker was automatic yellow card, so Webb should have been off for 10 minutes shouldn't he?
