Don't agree at all, McCllorum is a pure and simple first class grub where as Hock was a pure and simple first class head the ball.

| I'd love to see McIlorum at Wakefield, haven't had anyone like him since Moore. Grub? Well maybe he is but its a grubby sport, half the appeal of watching in the first place was the rough stuff.

| The thing for me is you dont have to be a grub.
Justin Poore ? Was a no nonsense prop forward who never took a step back and made his presence felt .
He could sort things out and the opposition didnt mess with him.
Always thought you need a bit of an animal in the pack.

| Mcllorum is a fantastic player, he would be a fabulous signing for us. He simply would not accept the standards our players and coaching staff have been serving up these last couple of years. Don`t you worry our soft forwards would have to man up or ship out. Plus he would ignore instructions from our coaching staff and manage the game how it should be managed.

Correct we need someone to take it to the opposition and shove it up them, someone who leads from the front

No, he wouldn’t accept it would he...what happened in those games then to your beloved Mcllorum? Did he forget to be the enforcer?
So easy to heap praise on a player when the WHOLE team is playing well...

With Budgie Firth thrown in for good measure, and from a later era Steve Lyons.

Nah, Briggs was in the second row, with Vines, and Rocky at LF. Budgie Firth was blind side prop.

They were big hard men but I'll bet some of our backs are heavier than they were at the time. Modern training and diet.

| Players of a different era, not saying they weren't "hard" i.e. dirty, but they would have long bans in the modern era with cameras recording late shots and would have to adapt their style. I remember Chris Burton being described as having an awkward tackling style!

Pops theres an old pic that pops up regularly on wakey history pages and it clearly shows Briggs about to pack down in the front row. It may have been a one off but none of them would have fitted in with the modern game as the shirts don't have collars for them to turn up to make them look hard.

I'm sure there must have been a time when he had to fill in but predominantly he was a second row.
He played at Wembley in second row and when he played for Yorkshire and England too.
Don Vines did switch between positions and anyone who met Briggsy in his pub at the top of Stanley Hill will know he was a big bloke but he was a runner in his day and a fit bloke.

| Brian Briggs played in the second row in his time at St Helens, as far as I remember he played in the second row for Yorkshire and GB while at saints and not at Wakefield, he used to wear the number 10 shirt at Wakey which was the blind side prop with Jack Wilkinson at tother side at open side prop with Geoff Oakes and then Jan Kosonovic sandwiched in between, next time the ground is open to spectators ask Nelly Fox or Ian Brooke, I'm sure they'll be able to shed some light on the matter, when Briggsy first signed for the club he lived on Irwin Crescent Eastmoor with his parents.
