| Well it’s time for Vastman’s Christmas speech!
Whoopee I hear you say.
Anyway’s time to talk players. I’ve never been more excited about a forthcoming season. One because it can’t be worse than last year, even if we get relegated! Two we have a good coach and a more seasoned chairman at last. It must be a genuine shock to MC to see how a real coach prepares a team for the season. I think he might privately agree that the two previous incumbents may have pulled his pants down a little. Three because by and large the coach has signed the sort of players most Trinity fans could see we needed. Sure we still have some relentless moaners but for the cash and pulling power we have it’s quite impressive all things considered.
Last season was a disgrace pretty much to the last game, no way around it. Yet no one saw it coming, some of our resident experts will say they did but they didn’t. With a few obvious exceptions that team on paper was OK and IMHO grossly under performed. Last season there was a deep malaise at the club which began with Agar and Glover and was carried through to near completion by Webster. Added to this we had an inexperienced Chairman who should have acted sooner but I accept hindsight is a great gift.
Now we have moved on with a new coach and a revitalised club, or it feels like that to me. As ever the squad we have is a mixed bag, however what makes it interesting to me is the number of players who could go either way - many have the potential to be far more than they are. Now I’m fully aware this is Wakefield and I know our ability to shoot ourselves in the foot is unsurpassed - I’m also well aware of our place in RL food chain and how easy it is to be negative. However as a fan I live in hope and thus I will give my player assessments based on the hope that they all have the right attitude and stay fit. So here goes, please feel free to counter with your opinions.
[size=150Marquee signing[/size
Anthony Tupou: There is only one and he’s it. A lot is expected from this player and rightly so. A word of warning, anyone expecting the Tupou from Test and SOO days is deluded IMHO. He is not that player anymore and why would he be, he’s 30+ and that was 7 years ago. However even if he just maintains his Shark form he will IMHO be one of the top half dozen second rowers in SL - not bad for a club like ours.
[size=150Safe signings[/size
Anthony England: Big strong solid prop, not up there with the very best but will add greatly to ours pack.
Liam Finn: I’m a fan some are not. However he is a proven reliable playmaker who other players understand and who can finish off a set.
Tinirau Arona: Can’t help but think he will be decent but know little of him other than most Sharks fans liked him..
Ben Jones Bishop: Ben is another one of those nearly players IMHO he’s nearly world class but not quite - hence no a marquee signingIMHO - he would in all honesty still be at Leeds if he were. However he is still a very naturally gifted player and athlete. To me he’s a supercharged Mathers (as a FB), good but occasionally loses the plot. More than most players attitude will decide how well BJB does, right attitude = star player.
Ashley Gibson: Safe player if used correctly, not a world beater but a marked improvement on last year for me.
[size=150Rescue squad: (all these players were brought in by BS and should be judged on a full off/full season)[/size
Scott Moore: Head gets right then we have a quality player - the ultimate attitude player and a risk.
Bill Tupou: I liked him from the start, strong and direct and for me more than capable of being a good centre - but not the new Neil Fox.
Jordan Tansey: A career marked by a fantastic start then continual decline. Really is his last chance, best hope is that he will be fitter than he has been in years. Got some ability but needs to re-find it soon.
Mikey Sio: Good steady player, won’t let us down IMHO.
Stuart Howarth: Ultimate utility/filler player, will get a few games and will probably do OK.
Anthony Walker: Did well considering when he arrived and the poor physical condition he was in - maybe a surprise package.
Andy Yates: Good grafter but at 26 still looks far to slight of build to really make it - good cover.
[size=150The originals:[/size
Tom Johnstone: Possibly the only shining light from last season and now a regular first teamer. This kid is good, that disallowed try against Bradford had it stood would have been a contender for try of the season - plus he scored a few beauties of his own. Hopefully he will be stronger this year and won’t be bounced off as easy, probably his only issue - even then he was always in the right place to get bounced off which is good.
Richard Owen: Real shame as he was coming good when his injury jinx hit again - let's hope he’s over it and carries on as he was then we have a fine and versatile player.
Jacob Miller: There are few players who have driven me to despair as much as this lad. There was a point where I didn’t just doubt his ability as a half back I actually doubted he’d ever be a RL player. BS has had more effect on this player than any other. His decision making is still poor on occasions IMHO as is his distribution - however his individual contribution has been much improved. Some way off the finished article but now a useful contributor - lets hope we see further improvement.
Nick Scruton: Carry on.
Mikael Simon: Carry on.
Danny Kirmond: Nice to see you again it’s been a while. Let’s hope Tupou pushes Kirmond back towards the player he was and The MPG was not just a blip. If so that’s a good back row!
Reece Lyne: Last chance, possibly the player most likely to go out on loan.
Matty Ashurst: One of the under achievers though tbf injury saw to most of that. Looked good before his injury and a genuine big unit.
Joe Arundel: Fell sorry for this lad, replaced a better player in Walshaw IMHO which annoyed people and arrived unfit and unprepared - needs an off season and a fresh slate then he could prove to be a decent centre.
Jonny Molloy: Needs to step up to the big time after a few seasons of gradual improvement or will always be a cover player.
Scott Anderson: For once I agree with Belly and Tryscorer, I don’t get what all the fuss is about - definition of average last season - on balance a decent squad player.
Craig Hall: Who knows, massive ability and massive flaws, can’t predict but fingers crossed. In his favour he should be injury free.
Chris Annakin: Happy to have him on board, good impact player and a big year for the lad.
[size=150Young guns (best for a while)
[/size
Sean Morris: Not young I know but a SL novice. I hear great things, lets hope they are true and this speculator pays off.
Max Jowitt: Has the hardest job ahead of him and I feel sorry for him. As a FB you don’t get many chances. It’s not like young forwards who gets time to mature. FB’s have to grab their spot when the chance arrives and hang on for dear life. He needs to impress from the moment he gets a run out or he will be running out in the Championship before he knows it - sad but true.
Jordan Crowther: Long career ahead of this lad, probably limited appearances this season but steady away.
Ben Shulver: Always rated this kid and was sad to see him leave as I was sure he’d make it. However wise move by him, untainted by last season and will have learned far more in Australia than he would ever have with us last season. I reckon with a few chances and no injureies he could be first team this time next year.

| Good read Vasty. Was getting a bit bored without any signings to talk about or games to review.
We very much agree on the whole view of the squad.
I certainly agree about Finn. I think he's the main puzzle piece we have missed for some time.
I think Gibson be a fans favourite as well. We are not blessed with centres but he is such a step up I think the fans will really take to him.
I think more of Anderson than you but he needs to have an injury free run to prove his worth.
Molloy is similar. With Smith's arrival he really looked the part but he has to stay on the field to be worthwhile.
I'll be interested to see where Smith plays Simon and Arona as each can play all the pack positions. I liked the pack when Simon was at 13 but we may have others who can do that job now with more back row skill.
Really not sure about Tansey. He is frustrating and he need to bring his A game regularly.
Overall I think this is a team that can compete.

| Agree with others a very good post and would only add I thought Leeds did want BJB to stay but the good Dr came up with an offer they weren't prepared to match. I think he could be our star player if Brian Smith can get him back to his form at Leeds.
Whatever happens I am really looking forward to next year and I haven't said that for a while.

| Christmas speech!
More like a Christmas sermon from the reverend vastman! ( just jokin)
An excellent post mate. I suppose we will be looking for an improvement from most of the team from last year. For me the most important improvement will be the pre season that smith has them in at the moment. The bigger squad will have them competing for places, and I think there might be a few surprises players wise regarding who gets picked..
Here's hoping. Up up trinity!!!!!

| Yep that's a good assessment of how I see it, cautious optimism and everyone behind the club should see us gain some momentum. MC and Brian have worked hard to bring in some quality and added to our existing decent players and promising youngsters it's looking good to me.

| Yeah, good post, a sensible read in this time of very little happening. I must say it got me thinking of the new season and I too am more optimistic about next season than I have been for years.
I honestly think that players such as Miller, BJB and Johnstone will thrive on the coaching of BS!

| I think it is a fair assessment of the way things stand. I'm especially looking forward to Finn, Toupu X 2 and Bishop. Bishop for me could provide Trinity with something they have lacked for a while and that is natural pace.
In relation to the season I'm optimistic it will be of a better quality on the field and we will pick up some more wins and perform to a higher standard.
I do however have a real concern with the end result of next year. For me it is again all about survival and whilst I think we will definitely see improvement I think after a few years in the doldrums the whole standard of the comp will improve particularly amongst the traditional lower lights.
Widnes, Salford and Hull in theory have really signed well and cleared the decks of some bad apples. Hull KR I have doubts about from a playing and coaching position and hope Trinity can get ahead of them.
It is highly unlikely Leigh will make the same mistakes as they did last year and shoot themselves in the foot. They are clearly going all out for SL this year I expect in a poop or bust style.
From a supporters point of view what would you rather see? Another season of poor performance but ultimately survival like 2015 or an improved on field performance, a few more wins but then relegation?
I would prefer the former and the reason I pose this question is because we may have to be prepared for some sub standard performances given the expectation on the squad but a real emphasis on peaking at the end of the year if we are to survive again.

I'd rather see improved performances and survival - seems a rather odd question.
In fact what I would like to see most is some backbone and pride, supported by some intelligence on the field for a change. The results will come from that.

Obviously that is the ideal but and I believe a much better team than Trinity were in 2015 will most likely be relegated from SL in 2016, so that is why the question was asked.
I think Trinity need to personally still be very strategic in the use of the squad and resources throughout the year to ensure they are at the height of their powers at the end of the year for what I feel will be a really tough middle 8 competition.

| Think halls well down our list that's. It's a shame because he can be a reasonable player. Think he's the only player not to play for Smith. The end of season 8 will be a much harder proposition this time round, and for going in to them will be crucial.
I wouldn't expect any sl team to pull off what wake did last season based on performance and results.
Leigh obviously intend to learn from last year's experience but that does not point directly to promotion , will they be provided with enough tough games in the regular season.

Surely Leigh wont fit him in? They've just signed Willie Tonga from Catalan.

The speculation was about a centre from Catalan so Pomeroy was a prime suspect, in the end it was Tonga leaving Pomeroy without a club.
The fact that he's still here and not back in Australia suggests he still wants to play over here and with opportunities running out he may have to be more reasonable with his wage demands.
He'd still be a very good aquisition for us
Jones-Bishop
Johnstone
Gibson
Pomeroy
Tupou
Looks like a very solid three quarter line

| Quote ="The Avenger"The speculation was about a centre from Catalan so Pomeroy was a prime suspect, in the end it was Tonga leaving Pomeroy without a club.
The fact that he's still here and not back in Australia suggests he still wants to play over here and with opportunities running out he may have to be more reasonable with his wage demands.
He'd still be a very good aquisition for us

I'm not even sure if we're talking to him anymore, probably not!
All I'm doing is speculating, he may have been too expensive when we spoke to him first time but his options are now very limited and beggars can't be choosers. So, his demands might suit our evaluation and IF we still have the funds/quota space then he'd be a very useful acquisition.
I know it's not likely but I'm just speculating as I said earlier
