Just a convenient target for your angst about the position that you found yourself in. Coalminers, Steelworkers et al were all well paid compared to their counterparts abroad and that is the reason for the end of British manufacturing. Not that it was any of the workers doing and I completely empathise with them over the hardships caused by the power struggle in parliament. To hold the govt to ransom once is daring, to try it again 10 years later is misguided at best.

To gain public sympathy, the NUM should at least have called a ballot. They didn't, and that was the start of the problem.

If the unions had won it would have meant the falling of three governments in about a decade, and thatcher wasn't (quite rightly IMO) going to let that happen.
The union leaders were far too strong for their own and their members good, never should such groups of people have been able to hold a gun to the heads of the nation and it's people.
In hindsight it's fairly obvious but the miners (and other trade unions) were swept away in the surging fury of their leaders speaches and promises, it had worked in the past and it will work once again, bloody hell it's only a woman.
Like her or loathe her, the trade unions met their match in Maggie, she was as ruthless and blinkered as they were, sadly that led to much suffering for the average man, but ultimately, as it should be IMO, the elected government of the day called the shots, not some lawless hot head union leaders.
