Quote ="SaintsFan"I went to the match in part to see what Widdop was like, since I had no idea at all. While I thought he was good, he was not really tested defensively, so I'm reserving judgment on him really. I was certainly impressed with his pace and sidestep; I can see the Billy Slater influence there. I'm glad he got the chance to play but I'd like to see him up against the Aussies before deciding whether he is good enough, in spite of the fact that we have virtually no options at all at fullback.'"
I appreciate this, and in fairness the opposition was not up to anything near top standard, but in a team containing players like Burgess, Ellis, Morley etc I still feel he was the second best player on the field behind Sam Tomkins.
Even in previous games vs France and other poor opposition I have not seen a fullback have such a positive influence on the game.
He played very much like an NRL fullback linking in attack and acting as an extra half, something the teams with the newer Aussie coaches are doing to great effect and success.
