| With respect to everyone at the club where would you rather see the council make cuts?
Schools, refuse collection, road maintenance, social services or a sports club?
They've cut the funding to City and the B*lls as well so it's not anything against Keighley.
My own mother is employed by the council and has been put on notice of potential redundancy 3 times in the last year. The sad fact is there isn't enough money to go around and politicians and civil servant have to make tough decisions and ultimately get their priorities right.

| Have to slightly disagree as there is money still out there and it is a question of where it is targeted. Cougars do a lot of good work for the whole community, which is where the monies were intended. Keighley can certainly be described as a particularly deprived area. Money can still be found, it seems, for daft projects for minority groups.

You are right there is still money around, just a lot less than there was before. Central Government are giving less and due to higher unemployment less folk are paying in. You are right about it being targeted correctly. Essential public services obviously have to come first, then it starts to become difficult there are plenty of projects out there who also want funding. Look at it from another perspective City and the B*lls have lost their funding as well. Neither of those 2 sporting clubs are exactly rich how would you feel if you were a supported of those clubs and found out Keighley were getting public money yet your club wasn't?
Quote ="Lawkholme Len"Cougars do a lot of good work for the whole community, which is where the monies were intended.'"
Cougars do a lot of good community work that cannot be denied. Whilst they reach out to many people and do not actively exclude anyone, they do not serve the whole community. There are plenty of folk out there, myself included, who don't benefit from their undeniably hard work. Bear in mind as well that only around 2% or 1 in 50 of Keighley's population actially turn up to Cougars' home games.
Quote ="Lawkholme Len"Keighley can certainly be described as a particularly deprived area.'"
Parts of Keighley could be described as deprived, but then so could many parts of the wider Br*dford district also, much worse than Keighley in some cases.
Quote ="Lawkholme Len"Money can still be found, it seems, for daft projects for minority groups.'"
I think you'll find that in a free and fair society minority groups whether it be on the grounds of age, ethnicity, socio-economic, disability, religious beliefs, nationality and sexual orientation are as much entitled to funding as someone from a majority group (if there truly is such a thing). What may seem daft, trivial and a waste of money to one person or group may well be absolutely vital to another.

I fully agree Rach that project was a ridiculous waste of public money. I don't think anyone of sound mind can justify the expense. It was however budgeted for and funded in less austere times.
And where was The Right Honourable Member of Parliament for Keighley when this £24m was being spent so frivolously? Seeing him bemoan the club suffering a £20k funding cut is kind of ironic.
Unfortunately that sad episode is in the past. All we can do is hold some the people responsible to account by bothering to turn up at the polling booth and getting rid of them. An important civic duty that sadly many people it has to be said can't be bothered with nowadays.

It states the club is being managed as a break even business and a loss of £20K would leave a big hole. That's the way I read it anyway.

The Country is in a mess financially and everyone has to do their bit. I think that is broadly accepted. In the grand scheme of things it would appear that £20K is a drop in the ocean in terms of what the council are looking to save. Penny pinching some may say. If the Dulls and City have lost their respective grants then the way I see it is there is no way the council will change their mind. If they did then I am sure City and Dulls would be knocking on the door and before you know it £20K turns into £60K.
The key part for me is the notice given (if at all!). If the Cougars knew about the potential loss then it seems suicide to include it within the budget. If they didn't and there has been some admin error then it would seem fair to allocate this year on the premise that this is the last.
I think their are some fair points being made on this thread and I can say with experience that there are question marks over where the council funding goes and I can see where Lawkholme Len is coming from. I think some may have missed his point.
It's all the more important than people get down and support the team this year and hope that the actual attendance vs forecast is positive and that potential deficit is taken care of.

Rumour has it they have done a revolutionary deal with the council:
Bulls have leased the city centre public toilets then done a deal with the RFL for a reported [i"five figure sum"[/i. RFL have said this will allow them and the Bulls to take the p*$$ even more than they already have.

I heard that the toilets in question includes a particularly lavish outdoor latrine that's recently been commissioned outside city hall at the cost of more than £20m.
