I have to say that there was a certain excitement about the game on Sunday that gave me the feelings of that great days gone by too.
Can we compare Paul Handforth to Chris Robinson?
I have to say that as great as the cougars were in the days of cougarmania Chris Robinson was one of the weaker players of the team imo, Paul Handforth was pretty impressive and controlled the game exceptionally well on Sunday.
The best game I have seen at cougar park since cougarmania? I believe so but we need to see this quality display week in week out to believe that the cougarmania days can be once more
Charlie thinks you have the makings of a good team ,no doubt the best team lost today , your full back and halves all played well , as did your pack , I agree about Cougarmania , but cut out the Cougar Crawl
Quote="Lawkholme Len"James Craven looks like the best full back since Andre Stoop and can you compare Paul Handforth with Craig Robinson? Are we getting carried away?'"
Craven was outstanding, as he always was for Dewsbury, against Leigh.
It's always difficult when comparing players across generations and it's also worth while noting that at the peak of cougar mania we were full time.
We also have to consider that coach Phil Larder picked players to play a system that was built around "defence first". Chris Robinson may not have been as creative as Handforth (for instance) but boy could he tackle, he didn't fear anything. Plus he had a bullet pass to get the ball out fast. It's ironic that he was injured for the old Trafford final and his replacement Darren Appleby, ran an arcing run through the defence to put Woody in under the posts. This move, that put us on the road to victory, was one that Chris probably would not have done.
We have some new players who we haven't seen enough of to judge, but Andy Shickell has performed at a high level consistently for several seasons and would get my vote to rank alongside cougar mania players.
It will be interesting to see how Ross Peltier develops, he looks to have all the attributes of a barnstorming prop.
As for the "cougar crawl", it was a bit of fun to get the crowd going, but was seen as a sign of disrespect by the opposition and wound many sides up to perform even better against us. I wouldn't want it to return.
Yea man, I remember the Cougar Crawl really annoying Andy Gregory when we beat Salford at the Willows, after being 10 nil down in the first half and they made sure it wasn't done again in the return fixture at Cougar Park.
