Fella, you and I tend to share the same opinion on players (I only post when I disagree with you ), but I cannot agree re Alex. I just don't regard him as partiocularly good. if he played for us, he would look as bad as Dunne did last season. I'd have Onouha over Alex.

| Quote ="Enfield Exile"Only in terms of current levels of competitiveness and CL qualification. In terms of popularity (i.e. supporters), you are still a fair way behind us even with your recent 'history'.'"
Judged by average attendence over the history of the clubs, Chelsea are the fifth best supported club in England and Citeh are 7th. But don't let facts get in the way of your dreams.
And I'm sure that it'd be really worth it for JT to go to Citeh for the "more popular" Citeh. Well worth giving up competitiveness in the league and CL for the extra support he'll get. Might be a bit puzzling for him why all those Man City fans don't manage to fill the ground for league games though.

I've not seen enough of Onouha recently to say how good he is, but from what I've seen of Alex he's always impressed me. He's quite quick, strong and worked very well with Terry towards the back end of last year. Opinions, don't you love 'em?
I think City definitely need a centre half, but surely there are cheaper, more achievable options around than Terry?

According to some list I viewed a few weeks ago, City were fifth. Another list I looked at claimed we were third. I cannot even remember seeing Chelsea on the two lists.
Has there been any occasion in the last 40 years where you have had a higher average attendance than City for two seasons running? I would guess that not to be the case. However, in the reverse, I would say we have surpassed your average attendance many times. As long as I have been watching football, we have been far more popular than Chelsea.

Even Dunne would admit to that
There are cheaper alternatives but we do need a leader. Terry has never been a world class footballer IMO, but he does appear to be a very good leader. We will need a leader when we are in places like Stoke and our fancy dans are not having it all their own way. I cannot think of anyone else who would fit that bill. Vidic would be a decent signing, but I think it would be cheeky to steal two players from United in one season. We will wait until they have a fire sale
We are being linked to Lucio but not sure if there is any truth in that. I don't think he is the solution. Each top team needs a leader(s) IMO. We have some pretenders who could develop into leaders (e.g. De Jong and Kompany) but we need someone who can lead the club now.

I am trying to find the list but teh search facility on the forum is awful. I looked at the figures you provided were for 1947 onwards. It doesn't say it under the figures but it is identical to another list I have viewed. Prior to the 1950s, City were arguably the best supported club in the country. We had several crowds over 70k, with our record attendance in 1934, which was 84.5k against Stoke.

| I can understand why 80,000 people would want to pay to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play because he is a magnificent player. But I can't for the life of me figure out why they'd go out of their way to be at a welcome ceremony for him. Sad ****ers should get a life and find something better to do, just like their dozy geordie cousins.

In some ways I find it incredible that a team has such support. It's mind-blowing.
I loved the staged pitch invasion. It was similar to the time in which Beckham was welcomed to Real and a young lad ran on the pitch to hug him. How cringeworthy.

Is this guy for real?!
[iWe had hoped to meet with Michael before we went to Italy but when you're up against Manchester United, you know you're on the back-foot," he told the Hull Daily Mail.
"To be in a two-horse race with Manchester United for an England international gives me great pride.
"He was ready to consider coming to Hull City but he has joined the champions of England. You can't argue with that but for me it was positive to see us in the running."[/i
You're proud? Of coming second in a 2 horse race? Would he still; be proud to know he would also have come 2nd in a 1 horse race? I'd imagine Owen would rather have retired than go to Hull. How on earth can he claim it was a 2 horse race when he didn't even get to speak to Owen?

Mmm!
Chelsea were statistically the best supported club for many years before the Second World War. The only time that City were the biggest suppored club in the country was in 1927-28 when we were actually in the Second Division.
However, it is very much true to say that City's support eclipsed Chelsea's throughout the 70s, 80s and early 90s.
Statistically though, because Chelsea had such a large average crowd in the Pre-War years, they are ahead of us in the all time list.
City were always the best supported club in Manchester, until the 1940s, but we used to attract massive crowds for the big games only and did not sustain anywhere near that level for average league games.

That 's not what I was told in a discussion with Andrew Waldon. I cannot remember the exact figures but we managed to get "regular" crowds over 50k pre-war, with some as high as c80k. Certainly not an average anywhere near 80k but I was given the impression that they were c50k by Andrew.
I always thought that Chelsea's attendances peaked in the mid-50s?

Well he's taking !
I do believe that we had only ever broken the 40,000 average four times in our history before we moved to the COM Stadium.
www.mcfcstats.com and Gary James' book 'Manchester: The Greatest City" are excellent points of reference for things like that.
Chelsea's crowds were at their peak in the 30s, 40s and 50s I think.
The all time averages are on this link, up to the summer of 2008.

That's another source with City in another position. We are now the 3rd, 5th, 7th (provided by LGJM) and 8th best supported team. I would have thought that counting is an exact science.
Did you ever go to Maine Road and here the attendance announced, and then think, "there must be at least 10k more in here than was announced over the tannoy"?
My dad was at a derby game in the late 60s' and he said the attendance was announced over the PA as about 55k, but there was at least 70k in the stadium. This happened quite a bit under Peter Swales (RIP).

| They're on the verge of missing out on Felipe Melo from Fiorentina. If I was Arsenal's chief exec I'd get my finger out of my a'rse and get the deal done before Juve do.
The thing is, Wenger could go from spending 20m Euro's on a central midfielder, to then not even bother trying to sign someone, and settle with what he's got, which quite clearly isn't good enough.
