Well said, Cortez was a joke. Unbelieveable scenes as to many parts of the fight and the word farce was certainly coming into mind.
Great victory for Calzaghe though, talk about being up against it but he still pulled it out the bag. Hopkins was as expected, ran away from Joe for 12 rounds and did nothing coming forward apart from a lucky knock down early in the 1st.
Some great moments though, one when Hopkins ran away and hid behind the ref and two when Calzage signed to be giving it Hopkins up the ar[is[/ie after he feigned another low blow.

| Must admit, I'm surprised by some of the gaps in the scoring. I had Calzaghe by a few points, but a six-point gap seemed a bit much for me.
Must agree on Cortez. I don't think he realises that we're not tuned in to watch him. When a referee is introduced with his own tag-line, you know it's gone too far. Hopkins didn't want to fight and he knew the referee would defend him if it ever looked in danger of turning into a brawl.

| There's not much Cortez could have done but deduct a point, and it wouldn't have stopped Hopkins holding anyway. The criticism he received from the Mayweather/Hatton fight may have been on his mind too.
Anyway, he wouldn't want to tarnish his HBO given repuation as ‘firm but fair’. I remember a time when referees were seen and not heard...

I think his legacy is secure over here with British fight fans, however he needs to become 'The Legend Killer' for him to have a universal legacy.

| Nah... just listen to the way the yanks spoke about him... they know... now he's P4P equal with PBF... shame he didnt go to the states earlier but he's a record breaker, undefeated, greatest Super Middle in history by a mile, pretty much there really. Will be rated with Monzon, Hagler, et al

F*cking rubbish Cortez isn't he? How much spoiling was Hopkins allowed to get away with? It was almost a carbon copy of the Hatton/Mayweather fight.
Personally thought Hopkins was about 3 or 4 points up at the half way point, but Calzaghe won 5 out of the last 6 rounds for me to just take it.

Grabbed Calzaghe's right arm on the blind side every time. Pushed away with the head. Basically did everything Hopkins has been doing for years and been allowed to get away with for years because he's Hopkins. You wouldn't see Micky Vann standing for any of that nonsense.

The most frustrating aspect for me was the holding again. He wouldn't let Hatton get on the inside whatsoever against Mayweather, yet he had no problem with Hopkins holding at every opportunity (when he made little attempt to fight on the inside). Absolute farce and spoiled the fight.

| It looks like Calzaghe v Jones is on already, after that who else is there for him to fight?I mentioned the judges and Cortez before and i was right for a change.I'd love Micky Vann to ref in Cardiff, for some daft reason he has to retire this year.Instead of Cortez with his blinkers image Vann saying 'Dont give me any f******* s***'!!

He is not in the same league as some of the real greats, just because he is unbeaten and been champion for such a long period, doesn't to me say he is a great(I know that sounds a bit daft). To me he has always faced people at the right times e.g Eubank(was past his best), never really taken anybody on during their peak. Dodged alot of good fighters unlike Clinton Woods who has been in with some of the best around. Now it looks like he could be fighting Roy Jones, how many years to later? Jones would have murdered him in his peak! He did a good number Lacy and beat a poor champion in Kessler in recent times and has now beaten a 43 year old man. Just my opinion.

I dont agree with that, do you honestly think Calzaghe could have beaten Jones at his peak?

Not a chance. PBF is a far superior boxer to Calzagie in every respect possible.

The Super Middle weight limit is 15/16 years old so to use the word "history" is misguided.

What planet are you on? Calzagie is not fit to wipe Hagler's @rse. If both fighters were at their peak, Hagler would have eaten him...

| Great win for Joe, really please he kept his unbeaten record going.
Thought Hopkins landed some clean shots but was outworked by JC. although I thought he won it by 2 rounds and some of the judges scores were a bit strange.
Have to agree with what has been said about the ref. he was shocking!

PBF is far superior to just about everyone in history in terms of technique, but technique alone does not a fighter make, he doesnt have the heart of a lion Calzaghe has... I am aware of the age of the Super Middle weight division...
Hagler would beat just about every middleweight you care to mention... does that mean Monzon, Zale et al are not legends? Just because Hagler would beat them. IMO with what Joe has achieved, he is without a doubt in the top 10 Middleweights/SuperMiddle weights Alltime... but Hagler would be number 2 for me, 2nd only to Robinson.

| Calzaghe didn't lose a round from the 4th onwards in my eyes. Did well to adjust to the fight as you could see from the first 3 rounds it wasn't what he was expecting.

| Before the fight I went for Hopkins on split decision and to be honest the verdict could have gone either way - the fight going to points must have been the easiest money anyone could ever make.
The fight itself, was, as expected, a bit of a dire affair between two counter punchers, Joe deserevd the verdict on the fact he tried to make it a fight, however, Hopkins with a little more work ethic would have really made things interesting.
I hope Joe doesn't go down the Roy Jones route next, he's another on the way down, Froch would be an interesting one but the Americans wouldn't be interested.
