Tonight's olympics were almost as good as Grand Final night

Brilliant on the track. As usual our footballers, paid millions, make a complete fool of themselves. Penalties are a simple technical element of the sport and we simply cannot do them.

The Korean penalties were perfection, utter perfection. It's not hard. If you are a pro footballer and you can't stroke a ball into the corner of the net from that range you should practice more. Sturridge's penalty was a joke, why the stutter? If you are going to mess about at least strike the ball well. A scuffed side foot? Utterly ridiculous from a guy no doubt paid more per week than more are in a year.

Perhaps as well as reducing the number of kids that can play football at junior level, we should also make it compulsory to have 1/2 of football training from age 6 upwards penalty practice?

When you look at the cycling, rowing and athletics teams (so far) in comparison to the swimming team then you have to ask questions of the management of the swimming team IMHO.
We haven't really looked anywhere near the best in the world.
Hell even judo which had its funding withdrawn have given us a silver and bronze.
I'll not mention the football as it isn't really a suprise.

Atmosphere in the Olympic Park tonight was, to quote Bert Le Clos, "unbelievable". Sitting in the Park live area watching on a big screen, everyone cheering, waving flags and dancing, then people leaving the stadium buzzing from what they'd witnessed.

There is every chance they all prefer the shortened names they are called unless as I say you know her and are aware that she doesn't of course.

I'm that much into this gold rush that I even want Murray to beat Federer today. Not the biggest fan of his, but I'm not one of those people who want to see him choke in every tournament he plays in.

I am delighted that the footballers haven't got a medal. It would have been a travesty for all the genuine dedicated athletes and sportpeople to have to share a stage with them. No footballer can compare to the effort that the real Olympians have put in. When you hear how they have trained, and then hear footballers going to a World Cup complaining of being bored, you realise what a waster bunch of chavs they really are. Football really does have no place in a celebration of true sporting greatness.

AFAIK she prefers Jess and it's what her family and friends call her.

I quite honestly don't care what she gets called, she'll always be a princess in my eyes.

Game of Andy Murray's life and the culmination of 20 odd years of potential or just Federer being unable to motivate himself for a lesser competition?

I really can't decide, Federer just didn't seem to respond, he didn't seem to want to respond. The cynical side of me says I won't believe that was genuine until he goes and does that to someone in the final of a major.

The culmination of 20 odd years of potential for Murray will be winning Wimbledon, not winning Olympic gold. If Federer decided he can't be bothered to motivate himself for an Olympic final, then the guy has gone down a lot in my estimation. He's a sports star, he should be up for anything whether it be a gold medal match, a Grand Slam final or an ATP Tour event.

Time will tell. If he doesn't progress from here we can adjust it down to a near-nothing achievement. But if he goes on to win a major or decimate Federer in one, we can say it was well deserved.

I wouldn't have said Federer was not taking it seriously. I think the Del Potro match took it out of him (I know Murray has played all that mixed doubles, but come on, playing mixed doubles isn't like going 19-17 in a final set against Del Potro who definitely was taking the Olympics seriously as can be seen by how pumped he was about getting bronze.

But overall Murray played the best match he has done in a big game, and he blew Federer away.

I don't think this should really surprise people though. I would have said if Federer played Murray 10 times in a major final I would expect Federer to win 7 or 8 and Murray to win 2 or 3. The probabilities of it mean that at some point Federer would be slightly off his game when Murray is on hot form and Murray would win that one. I don't see that as being a change in the balance of power, although Federer's age may mean in about 2 years there is a change in the balance between him and Murray.

Will this be the biggest success of Murray's career? Possibly. Depends on how Nadal's fitness recovers. As Federer ages, if Nadal never comes back to being the same player, then we'll have about 3-4 years of Djokovic and Murray at the top, and I think Murray might sneak a Grand Slam or two off Djokovic. If Nadal comes back to being the force of old then it will be Nadal who takes those Slams off Djokovic.
