| It would seem that the novelty of top flight football has well and truly worn off. You could always expect the Man U game to sell out, so the 18K attendance is shocking (esp with 6K from United).
Whelan must be doing his nut!

Paul Scholes was in possession and was shielding the ball from a defender, he ended up by pushing the player in the face.
The referee didn't see it, in football it's a foul, in rugby it's just a hand off. The Aussies would call it a don't argue.
The commentator suggested that it wouldn't have been out of place in a Wigan Warriors fixture
His tone of voice did not sound negative. I'd take it as a complement from a sport were you usually see players rolling around on the floor clutching their faces just because someone breathes on them

It has only actually sold out once since they came into the Premership. Twas in 2008 when Utd won the league in the last game of the season. So that'll be once in five attempts.

| This is a sample of some of the drivel spoken on that Latics forum:
"I'm not sure where you are from but the schools couldn't have been very good judging by your punctuation and sentence structure
80% of Wigan Athletic fans are from Wigan
61% of Wigan Warriors fans are from Wigan
so if anyone has got fans from Skem it is more likely to be Wigan Warriors
On a Wigan Athletic matchday the bridge over the canal is clogged up. On a Wigan Rugby matchday, the roads are clogged up, the reason being that your fans drive to the games, ours walk it because they live in the area. Wigan Athletic do not bus in hundreds of Amateur League clubs in on matchdays from out of town to try and keep up with their neighbours, nor do they give a whole stand away to sponsors to avoid getting a sub 10k crowd
Now get back to the third world board with all the other fat dinosaurs telling LIES about our football club because you can't accept the truth, you've already been run off here twice with facts and reasoned argument, in fact you came out with a load of racist drivel last time if I recall
Climb back under your rock, no doubt we'll see you again in a month when the thread has disappeared "
I dont know the last time "ScholesControl" went to a Warriors match but the canal bridge is always full after the game with large queues.

And there was thousands of Man Utd fans scattered around in the East and West stands. I was there too, it was shocking. I wasn't even in colours, and nobody around me was either, but Latics fans though we were United fans and kept turning round spitting at us and hurling abuse. Anybody that they guessed to be united fans ended up getting jumped on. I've never seen so many fights in my life!

Quote ="Owdpopularsider"I posted similar on an old WRLFC and WAFC forum website back in 1999 yet nobody took any notice and the hatred got deeper and deeper. My orginal idea was to get the 2 supporters clubs together. Yes it maybe too late as the new breed of tics fan are far far more abusive than the old types but it may calm down the level of vitrol. If it saves WRLFC supporters getting spat at whilst in ASDA it'll have done a job.

So some of them are now willing to offer the olive branch "for the benefit of both teams' attendances"... or would that be the benefit of their own tumbling attendances?
Sell outs against Man Utd, Liverpool, Everton etc should be nailed on. They didn't sell out against Liverpool last season and now they pull in a laughable 18k with a massive away following against the champions. And they're as good as they'll ever be in footballing terms, it's all downhill from here. They must be bricking it.
I understand where some of them are coming from re: preferring when they were a lower league team. How can the average Wiganer relate to a team of Africans/South Americans earning thousands of pounds a week, who will jump ship as soon as another club shows interest?
Let um rot I say

It's not as low as 61% but it's fair to say that some of our fanbase comes from far and wide (1 bloke flies from Cyprus for every game ) but that is certainly not a negative thing. I was chatting to a Wigan fan from California in the Black Bull before the Stains game the other week, American accent n' all
We have a broad appeal that Plastics can only dream of and long may it continue.

| Why would anyone outside of Wigan support Wigan Athletic though? I can see the appeal of someone outside of Wigan supporting Wigan RL but surely if you are going to support a football team thats not your home town you wouldnt pick Latics.

| Because we enjoy to see them fail after what has been said and done to us over the last few years by them and Whelan. Maybe the people of Wigan who support the rugby team may have got behind the Latics if :-
1- They were even bothered about football being RL fans, I for one would draw the curtains if Latics were playing in the front garden.
2- The percentage of latics inbred morons who would start a fight with anybody who doesnt support Latics and insist on the local Wigan folk to "support Latics and if you don't I will flatten you even though I still support United/Liverpool/Bolton/City/Everton and will go back to that club once Latics are relegated" attitude.
3- The fact we are constantly reminded that it isn't our ground and they rub it in our faces that fact and were kicked out of the ground giving up valuable home advantage in the play offs last year.
4- The fact that, as someone said earlier, that how can the local Wigan people relate to any of the Latcis players being from South America/ Africa and earning thousands a week and will jump ship at the slightest sniff of interest from other bigger clubs. With the rugby team you have 6 to 7 Wiganers in the team each week and that figure is only going to improve.
Lets face facts Latics will only have any sort of loyal support if it starts winning trophies and bringing superstars throught he junior setup over the space of 20 to 30 years in the premiership/championship and they will never take over from Rugby League as Wigans number one sport! FACT!

Exactly!
The areas from around Wigan being:-
Bolton - Will support Bolton or Man United
Warrington - United or City
St Helens - Liverpool, Everton, United, City and maybe Latics the pee the Wigan RL fans off
Leigh - Man United/City

These figures relate to the WN postcode. As I understand it both Skem and Leigh have WN8 and WN7 respectivley, therefore the fans from these area are taken into account for the demographic areas of both WRLFC and WAFC fans bases.
Trust me there poohloads of newbie Tics fans coming from Skem not so much Leigh, theres deffo hardly any from Skem or certainly not from Leigh coming to watch the Rugby.
Id like to see the figures for WN1-6 postcodes.
