Who last season were down to 'their Fourth or Fifth choice half backs'?

Do teams even have 4th and 5th choice half backs?

Pretty sure we had a fair few injuries throughout last season also.

The loss of Roberts alone (and he wasn't alone) was worth the loss of two or three players, given the form he'd shown up until that moment.

Huh? He was a superb captain in the Four Nations. Led from the front, as would be expected from him. That most of the team couldn't follow where he was leading was the problem of his team mates, not him.

so...poor leadership then...you have to adjust your leadership style not make people follow yours.

Before i read past 'dont count your chickens yet' may i ask where in my post am i counting my chickens? Nowhere have I hinted that Wigan will win the grand final again.

To be honest, we're reading an awful lot into one photograph.

But that picture does seem to say a lot.

We had five captains last year because Michael Maguire wanted to create an 'officer corps' within a previously leaderless team, which he duly did. With Wellens and Graham, given their increasing propensity to throw hissy fits if things aren't going right, I can't help suspecting that they've both been made captain because they both demanded it.

Okay, it may have been a momentary thing which caught them all at a bad moment, but that photograph does not appear to show three men who see eye to eye on things.

It's a bit weird this one, for the last decade St Helens have gone through a succession of all their club heroes getting a couple of years or so of being captain (Joynt, Sculthorpe, Long, Cunningham) and now when they get to the last of that group they don't give it him. Surely it would have made sense to give Wellens the captaincy for 2/3 years till he retires, at which point Graham would be 27/28 and hopefully at the right level of maturity to take up the captaincy. Unless, they are giving him the joint captaincy earlier than planned to try to stop him buggering off to the NRL, having two captains also means if he does go next year then they will still have a captain in Wellens. If that's their thinking it could be pretty smart, just speculation though.

That's how it seems to be. They want Wellens as captain, but Graham wants to be captain and they need to keep him happy.

Ah. I see. So that's why we regularly beat the Aussies when all the previous players were captains. Or were they all poor as well?

At least James Graham has actually captained a side to victory over the Aussies.

Actually, they have given the captaincy to both of them. Both Wello and Jammer are 'club heroes' and equally right for the job but with very different styles.

What a stupid thread..... making a judgement from one picture... lets see how their team works with the dual captaincy. Watch the video on the super league website and it tells a different story.

This sounds like wishful thinking from Wigan fans IMO.

One thing I would say is that ginger is rather childish and does do alot of dummy spitting, not a great example....

However, more than one captain worked here so it can work at saints, I'm pretty sure the team will buy into it.

Finally, if the team does not play as well as last year then I doubt you could put it down to this decision (which some probably will) they have lost their most influential player along with one of super leagues best centres, both were very experienced players.

I don't think you would put Graham in the same category as the guys I mentioned though would you? Not yet anyway. Wellens seems a much cooler head under pressure than Graham for my money.

He doesn't half whinge to the ref, though.

Loads of captains do that, to be honest it can be smart to an extent. Graham just loses the plot altogether though sometimes.
