| Quote ="Slugger McBatt"Isn't it nonsensical to expect him to compete for the kick? He is never going to win in that situation against most wingers, and it would be a shame to see a promising British winger sidelined because of that. Can't they accept that he won't get the ball and then concentrate on how to stop the opposition from scoring?
For example. if Ainscough had let King catch the ball and then either hit King under the arm and forced him dead or got himself under the ball, it would have been no try. Sometimes, you have to accept you are not going to win a given situation, at which point you work out how to maximise your strengths,'"
You would think so but even the coach does not seemed to have worked on his fralties despite using it as an excuse to drop him.

| His defence does need working on, but that's down to a lack of experience. I'm sure he'll learn.

| A 6ft plus Matt King running onto a high kick the odds are always stacked against the defender in these situations. It doesnt matter if you are 6ft or 2ft the odds are with the attacker but obviously being 6ft does help.
Ainscough could have made a bit more of an effort but I think he was just completely caught out. He'll learn that all hes got to do is get in the way. He'll learn and get better from this with experience. This is not a big deal as some are making it out to be on this thread.
Carney and Robinson managed I am sure Ainscough will manage once he learns to put himself about a bit more in these situations.

| I presume they must have talked about it at half time, because in the second half when the kick came in Phelps made sure he was in directly front of King, making it a lot more difficult for King to "get at" Ainscough.
The penalty given against Fielden that led to Rileys try was ridiculous. Fielden makes the tackle, is still on his knees with his hands away from the Warrington player (Wood or Carvell?) and is directly in front of him
Fielden did not move, purely stood his ground. The Warrington player moves off the mark (forward), and should have been penalised.
That's why Fielden was so upset.
Then Briers conned the ref (experience) by taking a dive when McIlorum touched him.

Two of the most disgraceful moments in the game.
Tbh you seem able to move off the mark as much as you like, the same as you do not need downward pressure and control; merely be in the vicinity of the ball over the try line

| tbh I thought Fielden could have moved slightly back a little as there was no need to be so close to the defender.

tbh I'd much rather see players not moving off the mark. Happens in all games; it's blatant and the ref very rarely do anything (the only one I can remember in recent times was Webb last week).

The player making the tackle, Fielden in this case, has to allow the player playing the ball some space, he didn't, although he wasn't touching him with his hands he was still affecting the play the ball by having his knees in there.

| ainscough doesnt want to let this knock his confidence, he took a great high ball in the second half, if we learn how to protect him it would nulify the threat- perhaps pryce having a run inside him at centre?
i thought in attack he looked dangerous as usual, but he only came into the squad at late notice- keep working shaun, i think everyone is forgetting that the lads only 19, he is nowhere near the complete player yet and that is scarily good.

He's come good surely?
17 trys in 11 games is good enough for me. He has a weakness under the high ball fair do's but it's no disgrace and he'll learn his lessons.

| Do Wigan fans always have to make young players the scapegoats? It is the experienced players that are letting you down, not the young ones.

| King usually plays on the left hand side for us, I personally thought it was a great tactical decision by Tony Smith to swap him to the right wing when he knew Ainscough was playing on the left. Well done Tony Smith

| Can't see Ainscough being a centre, he doesnt have the size there either. Hell if that was to be considered I'd sooner have Goulding.
Noble has no idea what hes doing. Look at the line-ups we've had in defence on the wings. Shocking:
Smith, Goulding, Roberts, Mathers <-- You can laugh just looking at it
Tomkins, Phelps, Ainscough, Richards <-- Too small on 1 side
Smith, Carmont(Injured), Ainscough, Phelps <-- Its just asking to leak tries.

He'll learn his lessons = He'll come good.
I'm not saying anything about his attack, it's obviously great. His problem is kick defence, and every super league winger needs to be able to take a bomb under pressure, otherwise every team with a decent play kicker and a tall winger will exploit him. It's not all down to him though, he needs protection from his centre too.

But that is all the fault of his coach, the other 12 players, the opposition coach for targetting him, the whole lot.
Sean Ainscough is the complete RL player and is 100% immune from any sort of critical comment.

No, in fact there's a general scapegoat heirarchy:
1. Mark Riddell
2. Other aussies (bonus if Tim Smith's seen in King Steet)
3. Coach (bonus if we lose or he drops a youngster from the team)
4. Stuart Fielden
5. Andy Coley
6. Coaching Setup
7. Captain (bonus if he doesn't shout and scream when the opposition score)
8. Any player over the age of 21 who used to be a promising youngster who was going to be a world beater (bonus when they sign for Hudds or Salford)
9. Youngsters
There's only really one case I can recall of a youngster in his first season getting made into a scapegoat and that was Desi Williams
