| What a classically pointless thread!
The reason most fans dislike Tomkins is purely down to his cheating antics and gamesmanship. Don't kid yourselves you don't know what we mean; the trapping of an opposition players arm under the ball; the holding on to an oppostion players shirt whilst being tackled etc. Its nothing to do with the fact he plays for Wigan, nothing to do with us being jealous that he isn't in our team. He simply doesn't need the chip on the shoulder. Hopefully as he matures the arrogance will dissipate. (Moonlight Fit : can you understand that word - it means reduce)
I find it funny that you think that Tomkins is boo'ed because we're all jealous of him, but you admit to booing McGuire as you think he's a cheat! Classic Wigan! How does the chant go again.... oh yeah, "cheat, cheat, cheat" Brilliant that one
As for McGuire's try, it should have stood. I say that not simply because I'm a Leeds fan but because surely every drop goal should also be considered a knock on if that is the rule?
Enjoy your time Wigan, we most certainly did. Just hope you have a better coach replacement policy than ours.
Don't worry though, we'll be back

People trap the arm and hold shirts every game. Why is it only Sam who gets booed for it then?
As for a Leeds whino giving us a lecture on cheating

Your comment would mean you believe that ONLY Sam does this? Crabtree at Huddersfield always uses his free arm to wrap it round the back of the neck of the tackler! Do you Boo him?
We didnt Boo McGuire last week! I dont recall any Wigan fans Booing an England player do you?
If your suggesting McGuire was going for a drop goal then oh dear!!

as a neutral here, you make it sound as though Sam is the only offender here ! 'gamesmanship' or 'cheatin' or whtever you want to windowdress it as goes on in every game but loads of players trying it on to win over the ref.If the ref is canny enough he (or she) will know what's happeneing and let the play continue.Last nights game at Batley saw Mr Stokes get conned a couple of times by the players who won penalties with the more experienced players 'milking' the holding down etc.
I'd love to have Sam in my team as most fans would.I love watching him play even if it is for W***n,the man is class and will grow out of his childish antics.
As for McGuires' non try - correct decision for me though it would have been allowed if the VR hadn't been present.A 50/50 call which goes down to interpretation of the rules by the VR on the day.
BTW - i'd have McGuire in my team anyday too,what a player,'gamesmanship' 'n all.

No, you wazzocks.
Im suggesting that if you have hold of the ball, then drop it to the ground with the intention of kicking it, it should (based on last fridays decision) be a knock on. Yet a drop goal is disallowed unless the ball has touched the ground first! Very inconsistent.
As regards big Eorl, never noticed him trapping with the ball, but I'll look out for it and boo accordingly ironically enough Leeds wanted to sign the big fella, but ended up with the better prop from Hudds

Indeed, but they're the mighty Wigan Warriors remember, the biggest team in the stratosphere. Maybe after 3 successive titles we'll start listening/understanding.
Happy Birthday by the way

Answered your question! If its dropped its dropped regardless if they then kick it!! If they are attempting a drop goal thats completly different.

| What if a half back drop kicks it sideways, the winger is in acres of space, scores. Bring it back for a knock on?
I'm being pedantic of course. But come on! This is a discussion board - at least provide an argument. Thurston grubbered thru for one of the tries in origin on wednesday. He took that one on the half volley too - knock on wasn't mentioned at all. Grey area - as highlighted by Cummings comments the other night. Expect McGuire did it just to exploit the inconsistent rule book. What a cheat :-s

There is no grey area where knock-ons are concerned. Whatever Eddie and Stevo or even Stuart Cummins say, a knock-on is a knock-on.

| An alien arrives in Wigan. He's heard about how good wigan are at rugby league, but doesn't know the rules. How would you explain what a knock on is?
(repeat for drop kick)

Just wait until the new era that Cummins has just ushered in gets going - when every player who drops the ball then shoes it forward and tries to claim it was a drop-kick. That'll confuse your alien alright.

So in using that explanation we might as well abolish the knock-on? Because according to that theory if say a prop taking the ball in with a loose carry happens to drop the ball BUT sticks his foot out and hits it after the bounce, he can say he was going for a kick through/drop goal? Come on!
McGuire dropped the ball in a loose carry, he did try to save it at the last minute, but failed. No try everyday of the week IMO.

| Tempted to say abolish the half-volleyed grubber (since its a knock on by that logic), but then its quite an attractive skill (as McGuire demonstrated last friday). Guess referees, as in the case of foul or dangerous play, need to make a call on intent. I.e. Did he intend kicking that or was it an consequence of dropping the ball? Obvious in most cases (like your prop example), not so last friday imo.
Incidentally, I wouldn't wish even a wigan fan try explain the rules to an alien. I have enough issues with these Aussie Rules loving victorians.

Not sure anyone is suggesting that my friend. That would clearly be a knock on. Try it anyway. See how you get on fella. And get yourself down to the local debating team immediately. You'd be a shoe-in

IMO it was a consequence of dropping the ball. My question is, would you have the same argument if say...Kirke, Ablett etc: did the same thing? I think you're only questioning it because it was McGuire, and it's more likely he meant to drop kick the ball hence back up your claim.
p.s I still think it was a knock on.

| I have E mailed RFL expressing my puzzlement at Stuart Cummings interpretation and asking for a detailed explanation of it. I have also asked for a detailed public explanation to be made as this needs to be cleared up so that all levels of the game know the rul;es of the game as understood by the RFL officials
