| Quote ="Nogga"Clapping a decent try is fair enough, most knowledgeable RL fans will have done this many times. Mass applause and even chanting for catalans as they got into their positions for the re-start was an absolute disgrace. Think how the players were feeling at this point, you could see how gutted Sam looked and there were others who put 100% into that game as well who didn't deserve that.
If you feel the need to boo, leave it until the end of the game. Our home support is dire and very fickle and thats probably why our home form is so poor, you can sense that the crowd are waiting for someone to make a mistake so they can have a good whinge.

| So many people hate this, the same complaint was on the Wire board last week but i actually love it, it shows what sport should be about.
Yes we all love our clubs and we always want them to win but ateofd in the grand scheme of things it is only a game.
It shows that we do have a bit of class and puts us head and shoulders above other sports with the exception of Union who do the same.

Just bobbed on your forum to see what you lot were saying about the game. Chuft to read some Wiggin fans were clapping the Catalans players, they're not 'the enemy'. If the opposition play well or score a good try I think clapping them shows that you are not blind to only your team and shows class and sportsmanship.
Try being a Leigh fan, we're used to having to clap the oppo's.

| We were completly outplayed last night and any team that turns up with fight and determination gets applause from me, whether it be Wigan or anyone else. As others have said it's what sets us apart from other sports that we can have the humility to know when we've been beaten.
On a slightly different note, I think there were points last night where I think we were outsung by the Catalan fan last night. We need to get the atmosphere sorted out at home sharpish. It's like being at a funeral at the DW sometimes, but that discussion is perhaps for another thread.

I think sometimes the DW loses it's atmosphere because of the wide open corners, even if it wasn't seating, just to have the filled in would improve it in my opinion.
Fair play to a lot of Wigginers clapping Cats last night though.

| Quote ="Dave26"In the second half a large number of our fans were clapping les cats after they scored. I know we were crap but I don't understand the logic of clapping for the other team? Yes they played well, but they didnt play a world class game of rugby. IMO as a supporter you support your team, fair enough you may shout at them (I know I did) but why would you applaud the other team? Are we going to start doing that for every game that we lose, or is it because they came all the way from France?(they didn't, they stayed in Manchester all week)! When dureau put over the drop goal our fans clapped, they'd have booed long or briers if they had done the same
We were dreadful and they were good (maybe not as good as we made them look, I'm not sure), but Wigan fans are surely Wigan fans?
Maybe I'm in minority on this I don't know, but I wouldn't clap the other team. No matter the score I still support Wigan, whether they are playing saints or Catalans. Only at Wigan would you get the home fans clapping the away team for beating us.'"
It's called being a sporting supporter and a fan of the game.
Clapping is done to show your appreciation of an act.
Speaks more about certainly Wigan fans that people like you and a few others are too bitter to appreciate that Catalans totally outplayed you and got the 2 points despite virtually everyone thinking Wigan would cruise it.

Agree entirely - good rugby is good rugby regardless of which team plays it.

| I was applaud excellent rugby, like a really, good skillful piece of play leading to a try or a toughline conversion, at the time that it happens. That's how I was brought up at games as a kid by my dad and grandfather, taking pride in being a sporting rugby league fan. What I don't do until the end of the match is applaud the other team generally, e.g. as they are setting up for the kick-off after a score, as some people did last night. To me, that's crossing the border between being sporting and actually supporting the opposition. Others think differently, and that's OK too.

No it isn't.
It's no wonder Wigan fans are accused of being one-eyed, if you are only prepared to watch, and appreciate, one side in a game.

| Quote ="Rogues Gallery"It's nothing about making our player play better though. It's about showing appreciation of the good rugby played by the Catalan side. They were superb last night, yes we were off our game, but the score flattered us rather than them.
IL said in the SS bar after the game that it was good that Wigan fans applauded Catalan and showed their appreciation for Catalans excellent display.
Their scrum half gave the best display I have seen from an opposing player in all the the years since we moved to the new stadium. When he was substituted in the final minutes he was thoroughly deserving of the applause he got.
I'm afraid our game is heading down the way of football, segregated supporters and no appreciation of the opposition.'"
I agree - particularly the bit about Dureau, I can't remember a better individual performance against Wigan for a long while.

| I clapped Cats when they walked back towards the SS. This is a team that played against top of the league 5 days prior and beat them, had a quick turn around and beat the current champions on our own turf and with a hell of alot of flair anf skill!! As a rugby league fan aswell as a loyal Wiganer I don't understand how that is anything other than 'sportsmanship'??
The silly 'your not fit to wear the shirt' or 'Catalan ole ole ole' chants are just mindless kids IMO.
We're all different I guess - I have never left the ground before the final whisltle win, loose or draw but thats my choice.
Yes we were off the ball last night but can't take anything away from Catalan, they came to do a job and did it. End of.

I have said several times in this thread that Catalans were the better team and deserved their win, I don't think any Wigan fan has questioned this have they? In fact a lot of Wigan fans didnt think Wigan would cruise it, I know I didn't after they beat a very good wire side last week. I clapped them at the end of the game, not when they walked back to their positions. Other fans did and the purpose of this thread was to discuss peoples reasons for clapping/cheering. After being a Wigan fan for the last ten years or so I can assure you im not bitter about losing, especially not to the better team, I've had enough practice! Let's not make this about whether or not Wigan fans are bitter, to question the cats performance last night would be ridiculous!!!

Couldn't believe that that happened last night, embarassing to me, and yes I am a bad loser, I hate losing at anything, I hate my team losing, the wife hates my side losing, because she knows how I'm going to be when I get home!
Clapping the opposition doesn't IMHO make our players play better, and that's what we should want, not helping give the opposition the impitus to score more against us!!!
Not happy!

| I've watched Scotty D come through the grades at the Newcastle Knights since about 2003, and he is the number one student of the Knights halfback academy - well ahead of guys like Walsh and Mullen - but every coach in the NRL knows his achilles heal and knows how to beat a side he is in.
I'm not going to tell you - but every fan in Aus knows he has a very small motor and does nothing and becomes a huge liability in defence if you run all your forwards at him (did I say that out loud?)

Thats what makes genuine rugby league supporters so great, the fact that many supporters of Wigan and other clubs can appreciate good rugby league - even if its coming from the opposition.
Nothing stupid about that at all.

So much so the Aussies were roundly applauded for their brilliance on the day by the British crowd. It's not something that happens very often, probably wouldnt happen against a main rival.'"
Yes I remember that game at CP. The Aussies were awesome that day. I remember the time in the game when they strung together something like 20 passes (I am guessing at the number but it was alot) without being touched. The crowd spontaneously erupted in genuine applause for the brilliance they were witnessing. At times last night I appreciated the play from Catalans but I didn't join in the clapping because I felt some of it seemed patronising and just an attempt to vent frustration. I guess there was a mixture of feelings and certainly those chanted CAT_A_LANS was going a bit too far. I also think booing your own team is rarely justified.
