| Still cant believe this match wasnt on sky! Watched the re-run of the Catalan/Crusaders game last night when I got in from work, and my god what a boring game especially in comparison to the other two games last night in Leeds/KR and Saints/Dire.

There are also a few of them in denial - probably because they don't want to face the reality that signing him from Wigan was a not a snappy piece of business, but a mistake.

He beat Mathers one on one to get it down in the corner.
Read into that what you will

Proaly not helped by the fact that the other half of that deal, Martin Gleeson, is playing out of his skin for Wigan!

I didn't think Gleeson was too bad last season, but this season he's looked like the real deal.
Given that Mathers wouldn't have got anywhere near our first team this year, it was a belting piece of business from our perspective.

Getting him out of Wigan colours was a belting piece of business. He was and remains a liability when on a rugby pitch.

It really is narrow minded just to simply state that because Gleeson is undoubtedly a better individual player than Mathers, then it must mean that Wigan got the 'best' of any deal??
In the age of the salary cap, it is nigh on impossible to put together a squad that contains no supposed weak link....Yes, Gleeson is better than Mathers, but he was probably taking a damn sight more out of our budget than Mathers ever will....Without Gleeson's departure, could we have brought in Atkins, Solomona, Myler and kept under the cap??....I doubt it.
Its no secret, that since his arrival at Wigan, it has been painfully obvious that Stuart Fielden is grossly overpaid and is taking a huge chunk out of your cap that, if he left, could be used to better effect...But that is Rugby League in a salary cap era. You have to wheel and deal, get the best value you can from ALL your players.
I have little doubt that under the old system, Mathers would be shipped out, and with a bit of a help from our wealthy owner, a supposed World-class replacement would be brought in, on a huge salary and things would be peachy.
Luckily, that doesn't happen anymore, otherwise we'd have the tedious situation where one team dominates the sport, whilst spiralling into a debt which eventually cripples them, and forces them to sell the family jewels...

Nice attempt to change the subject.
But this thread is about Richie Mathers, and how relieved we all are that he's now counting against Warrington's salary cap rather than Wigan's.
No offence is intended to the lad - he seems like a nice guy off the field. I don't know what happened to him in Australia, but from the moment he arrived at Wigan it became apparent to us that he was not a SL standard player, and apparent to the rest of the world within a few matches.
That we managed to get anyone to take him off our books, let alone take him as part of a major transfer in which we secured the services of one of the best British centres in the game, is quite remarkable.
Spin it any way you want, but [uthat[/u was a good piece of business.

But it was good business from BOTH sides....Yes, you got a good centre, but we freed up a huge chunk from our salary cap, gaining 100k into the bargain, when in 6 months time we would have got nothing as Gleeson was looking for a way out and had been for ages, and most bizarrely we went on to win a long overdue trophy, which in all Gleeson's time at the club, we never ever looked like doing.
I agree that Mathers isn't anything fantastic, but with Gleeson the whole side wasn't anything fantastic.....As I said before, you have to cut your cloth accordingly with the salary cap rules, and because of this you have to have the Mathers' of this world in your squad...Similarly, to how in recent times, Wigan have had some right rubbish in their ranks....Yes, you may consider Mathers to be a prime example, but at least he wasn't stealing a huge amount of cash from you, like Fielden has done.

| i went to the game as a neutral with a mate whoose a saints fan.
few things to comment on:-
-silverwoods performance, he was shocking and seemed to penalise at least once a set
- saints didnt play well, too many errors on their part, but their defence looked tight, warrington couldnt take teritorial advantage.
- richie mathers produced one of the greatest 'bluddy hell mathers' moment ever, he basically tried to catch a eastmond high ball sat down and made a right hash of it.
