| Apparently Wigan Council has 10 gritter wagons that have to cover all of Wigan and Leigh.
Quote Gritters had been out across the borough since 7pm on Monday evening, using their snow ploughs in a bid to keep the main roads passable.
Highways manager Mark McCartney said the Met Office had upgraded the forecast for Wigan at 2am this morning from up to 3cm of snow to 10cm, making it one of the heavier falls in recent years.
However in some areas even more than this has fallen and the 10 gritting wagons have had their work cut out.'"
It did come all of a sudden over night. I was up late and it was rain till about 3am then it turned to heavy snow.
You also have to take into account the staff. One worker for another council said he had done over 100 hours overtime during christmas period to try and keep things going. If they employed loads of men and we have a mild winter, some people (not naming any names) would moan we were wasting cash on them.
The reason things are worse these days is a, the buggers that are [urlhttp://www.hse.gov.uk/[/url and b, the amount of cars on the road compared to 20 years has increased dramatically whilst public transport standards have decreased. People also have to travel further to work with most of the local factories having closed. |

Pretty grim round here and it's the worst since the 1970's . It's not as cold as the early 1960's and not as much snow, but there is still time for that with more cold to come/predicted.
The junior school I went to walked all the children across Hollingworth Lake near Rochdale in 1963, which was over 12 inches thick with ice. The teachers would be publically hanged for doing that nowadays.
I'd like some Global warming now please ?

Just spent an hour sledging on gathurst golf club with some kids and dads from my lads school. Awesome.
Shevington community primary must have been the only school open in Wigan today. It may be open tomorrow too.

gritting the roads is a very expensive operation, and grit/salt is pointless noce you get more than a fow inches of snow. I don't know why some people seem to think it is some sort of magic fairy dust, it isn't. Once it has been put down it takes time to work, following a gritter up the road won't make an ounce of difference to whether or not you're going to make it up that hill. But driving over it and workign it into the snow/ice will get it doing its job for the people coming up the road later on. In fact, one of the ways I can see what time a road has been gritted here is by looking at the temperature readings of the road surface thermometer. The temperature drops sharply once salt is applied. Try it, get a jug of iced water and stick a thermometer in. pour in some salt and watch the thermometer, it will go down before it goes up.
I have to deal with stupid questions from stupid people, but unfortunately I can't be as honest with the truth as I'd like to be. here are some FAQ's and the honest answers.
"why hasn't my road been gritted?" I'll tell you why. It is because there are more important roads to grit than yours, the resources are best used on main roads, hospital approach routes, school routes, bus routes and so on. If you really insist on having your road done, we will gladly accept a donation for the cost of another vehicle (£100k will get yo a cheap one), contributions to drivers salary (HGV drivers) and charge you for the salt/grit, call it £60 a ton including delivery. We don't accept western union or paypal i'm afraid.
"I fell off my bike because you didn't grit the road" I'm not surprised, and you're an idiot thinking you can ride a bike on ice. next time you try doing something stupid can you ask someone to film it for me?
"the grit from the lorry hit my windscreen when it went past, can't they turn it off when cars are coming the other way?" No. because idiots like you will complain then that the roads have not been treated properly.
"can someone come round and put some grit on my path so i can get to the pavement frmo the front door". No, take responsibility for your own property and your own actions.
"i live opposite the council yard and haven't seen a single gritter go out all week, i'm not going to pay my council tax until you sort it out". you are either a liar, blind, don't know what a gritter looks like, or haven't been sat twitching the curtains while they have been going in and out of the yard.
"we're the local radio station, can we come and take photographs of the salt stock?" why? seriously, why? if you concentrated on your radio station you might actually be able to get some listeners, leave the stupid photo taking to the crappy local paper!!!
"we're the crappy local paper, can we come and take pictures of the salt and then tweak the image so that it looks like the pile isn't as big as it is and despite the fact there is actually enough there for almost 2 winters (approx 800 tons), and that if you need more salt you can get it in a few days, we will make it look like there are only 2 days supply left to try and shift papers". sure, fill your boots.'"
I have a mate who does the same at Bolton council, people just need to open their eyes and look at the bigger picture. |

Every school in Warrington is closed. None in ashton are open. Most in Wigan are closed, some are still to be announced. |

Lets put it this way, whilst all surrounding areas had an inch of ice on them last week the 30 yards of pavement outside of the council offices (old gas showrooms) had 3 inches of grit on them. |

last weekend when we had a partial thaw, i cleared my paths and drive and pavement by my house (at a price i may add)
so why the fook didnt the council get a few JCBs and clear the roads? it was coming up in layers.

So these conditions aren't rare, yet they don't normally last this long? Perhaps that's precisely why they're rare???? Normally we get a snowfall and it's gone within a day or so. This has been going on for 3 weeks where I live, with snow, a freeze, slush, another freeze, snow, days of freezing weather, etc, etc, all topped off by 24 hours of heavy snow up until this evening.
I cannot recall such prolonged snow on the ground, so many snowfalls, such low temperatures all together over a 3-week period. I'm not of your advanced years but I can remember back well over 25 years, and Channel 4 have just stated this is the worst cold snap for 30 years.
And you think they [i didn't[/i stockpile before the winter?? Perhaps, just perhaps, there have been such prolonged and therefore unexpected conditions existing supplies have run out and are being replenished daily as they are thrown out onto the busiest and most vital routes day after day. Folk in Moscow get months of hellish snow every year. That is why they are prepared. We normally get a few days of snow and a few icey nights, and that's what we prepare for, with a few contingencies for harsher weather. Of course we could prepare for these conditions every year, have dozens of unused gritters sitting around for 20 years until they might be needed, hire additional staff just in case and add £50 to your council tax to pay for it all?

I work for the council so had to go in... They closed the service I work for at about 1pm though so everybody headed for home. Loads of people couldn't get in... It took me an hour and a half to just get from Goose Green to Golborne... And an hour of that was spent queueing on Warrington Road near Sainsbury's!
