Not enough cherry hoops for me, 1958 or 1959 ones for me with the 'shield' shaped badge.

1960 Championship final at Odsal.

One of my favourite all time photos.

I know it doesn't look it, but I believe that shirt was blue, it was the Championship Final in 1960 v Wakefield at Odsal, the photo was used in the painting of Billy and the artist changed the strip to cherry and white hoops to make it more recognisable to people.

I have that painting at home, and it is done with BB in a cherry and white jersey.

Oh I was there for that game, but I don't remember the shirt being blue, I think it was white.

I never knew it was blue.......but i did know it wasn't cherry and white as many photos seem to depict

I thought Wakefield played in their traditional white with red/blue band and we changed to blue to avoid a clash ?, I could be wrong it was a long time ago !!

We did give it back, I think Leigh East still wear it !!!!!!!!

I've always wondered if the old feller running onto the pitch is the same man celebrating behind the straw in your avatar picture.

Latics initially played in red and white (styled like a Blackburn shirt) during the 30's and 40's before moving to blue and white (styled like Arsenal). The stripes were born in 78 when we were elected to the league.


IMO the shirt has to be cherry/white hoops. You can still play around a bit whilst keeping the hoops (see QPR and 'the poor relations of Glasgow Rangers' shirts)

I'm sure we used to play in all-white in the late seventies, with the red adidas stripes down the sides. Can anyone confirm?

Sorry, I don't remember an all-white shirt but I palyed some rugby then so maybe I missed it.

All white with two or three red stripes down the sleeves IIRC.

I've seen the video of Green Vigo scoring about 4 tries against Leeds in an all red shirt.

He scored three at Headingley in a JPS game, and caused the Leeds and England winger John Atkinson to retire.
