Not one ex-player has come back and been anywhere near their previous level. Most are shadows of the player they were the first time. A disastrous strategy that has handcuffed the squad and salary cap. Lessons not being learned.
Whoever does our scouting and recruitment should resign.

| It is nonsense to argue that because other returnees have failed that Sarginson will therefore fail. That argument defies any kind of logic. Surely each case has to be looked at in isolation.
Sam Tomkins has been injured, but showed good form towards the end of the season. He may move back to the halves and who knows, may provide the answer there.
Joe Burgess had a long spell playing out of position and suffered because the lads playing wing did well and didn't deserve to be dropped. But it affected Budgie badly. I wouldn't write him off yet. He needs a full season on the left wing before we can judge whether he has been a success.
Joel and Tommy have been poor. Joel because he hasn't been fully fit since he returned. I believe that he is still a good player. Tommy may do well in a different role.
So it may be too early to write off the returnees. Dan Sarginson was one of the main reasons we won in 2016. Do people have such short memories? I'd have though that at least he deserves a second chance. I don't blame him at all for moving from sunny Wigan to the Gold Coast, I mean, wouldn't you?

| The joke club of Super League, Lenagan needs to sell up to somebody who has the vision to move us forward, i remember around the time he bought the club, an Oxford united fan came on here or the other site and forewarned us that this would happen, complete laughing stock, Ah Van would have been a better signing, at he can kick goals

If only he'd won something like the Super League, Challenge Cup or World Club Challenge then he'd be recognised as a good Chairman. I agree with you that we are the laughing stock, as this losing streak extends beyond the last decade it's getting totally ridiculous. Saints must be laughing their heads off at us after the success under McManus in the last five years. Wakefield, Salford, Huddersfield, Castleford, Widnes, Hull KR, Warrington and Catalans too.
Lenegan OUT.

I agree and I think that would be Radlinski. In this case if Sarginson does come back at his previous level, he will still be garbage. Can't pass and can't tackle.

Hardly garbage was he?
You don’t get selected for England if you’re garbage. You don’t light up a Grand Final if you’re garbage. I prefer him at fullback to centre but that’s the beauty of him. You can play him anywhere across the back line and he’ll do you a job.

It’s just crazy isn’t it?!
The Oxford United fans told us so...ha ha! I don’t know how much involvement he’s had with them but I doubt we’re in the same boat. Maybe they aren’t happy but they’ve not won every major honour in the game over Lenagans time at the club so maybe they’ll have a point being vexed.
It really frustrates me when I hear anyone question Lenagans position as owner of this club. The people who do that should let their minds drift back to the 2005 and 2006 seasons and have a think what they prefer.

He is rubbish. How he got selected for England I will never know. I doubt it will happen again unless Wane gets the England job. I was even more surprised when he got a gig with an Aussie club but I am not surprised he's been told by them he'd struggle to get a game with them going forward. I am sure they are as grateful we took him off their hands as I was when he went to join then. When he left no one gave a monkey's and for good reason. He is just speedier version of Gelling in that he has no rugby brain. He passes to his winger about once a season and his defence is awful.

He was garbage and still is garbage, we couldn't wait to off load him when the NRL came sniffing around and the supporters were glad to see him go. If you call putting a kick through for the winger to score as lighting up a grand final then yes lets credit him for that however his constant errors and total lack of creativity in games throughout his tenure with Wigan would indicate that one swallow definitely doesn't make a summer.
There has been some garbage playing for England over the years, why do you think we are only 3rd ranked in the world.

Not bad for someone who can't pass or tackle.

Someone else has said that he's injury prone, I don't recall him missing that many games for Wigan although I must admit the shoulder injury is a big concern. What's someone signing a fullback got to do with Wigan signing a centre. Castleford have signed Corey Ashton and Jamie Ellis!!
Also Catalan have released half their team so had plenty salary cap space available.

I'm with you. Anyone saying he is garbage needs to give their head a wobble.
For some folk you are either good or garbage, no in between. Still that's the internet I suppose. Extremes of thought masquerade as opinion.
I don't think either of us are saying he is the next Eric Ashton or Dean Bell, but for heavens sake no way is he 'garbage', just an above average pro who will put a shift in for the cause.

If you are on about the PNG captain who's signing I pointed out he can play across the back line and unless you know what he is being paid, which you don't, it does not follow they have released players just to sign him. They fact were poor last season has probably got far more to do with it. The fact you think we have signed a centre anyway brought a smile to my face.
As to two clips on YouTube, a stopped clock is right twice a day. There isn't enough bandwidth to show all the mistakes.

| Blimey. The Scrooge wannabes are out in force already & it's still 2 weeks to gluttony. Let alone 2 months to the season start. If this time next year we're looking forward to playing Barrow & Whitehaven then I'll concede being a happy-clapper isn't all it's made out to be, but FFS you lot, lighten up.

| DaveO I honestly think you would moan if we signed jesus, citing him having 3 days off with injury Though we do have a bad track record with signing injured players that doesn't mean new wigan policy should be to sign only new players with no bruises.
There may be a few clubs in SL with a better centre than Gells or Sarge but not many. I don't think there is a SL club with 3 centre options better than gilly, gells and sarge. The whole of the Wigan club owes a big season to the fans for sticking with them through the past 2 years. We also owe them some patience considering previous success in spite of ridiculous runs of bad luck with regards to injuries, I think the one thing we can all agree on is that they really do but their bodies on the line, especially considering how many must have gone beyond usually pain barriers due to the people we were missing.
Wigan may have played a safe option here, if Gells is 50/50 and then sarge signs elsewhere then we are left with 1 starting centre and a prospect. If the past 2 years have taught us anything is the importance of strength in depth. There may be many squads who can match us 13v13 but I don't think anybody can match us for a full squad.
I'm ok with wigan playing it safe with signings so long as we see something more on the pitch.

His Grand Final wasn’t just one kick to the corner though was it? He was sensational that night in all aspects of his play.
Let’s not judge him on one good game though. He has some limitations of course but he also has a lot of strengths. I can’t think off too many realistic options who we could bring in that could cover fullback, wing, centre and stand off as well as Sarginson could.
Does he fill me with excitement as a first choice centre? Probably not but as a utility option, I think it’s a cracking piece of business.

He was playing the centre role to perfection at that point. He’d got that frustrating step back in to the defence and away from his winger out of his game and he’d developed a cracking flick pass. After that season though he was shifted around a little and again developed those bad habits. He’s best at fullback for me but I’ve always fancied him more as a right centre (which is where you’d guess he’ll play going forward) because that natural step to his right will bring his winger in to play more often over on that side.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Gelling going forward. If he goes then clearly Sarginson has been signed to replace him.

| If he has been signed on similar terms as he was on in 2014, and if no fee has been paid for his services then it will be a reasonable bit of business.
If Tony Gelling leaves, it should be in exchange for a transfer fee.

I just can’t see the NZ Warriors taking Gelling on. Looking at their squad they have 4 or 5 options already.
I’d be amazed even further if they were prepared to pay for him.

| I think some people’s expectations of who we can and can’t sign are unrealistic. Unlike the previous owner IL is abiding by the salary cap which is devalued year on year. Looking at our squad many of us, including me field we need a utility back. It looks like KR & SW felt the same. In reality who else can we sign that firstly we can fit under the cap and secondly wants to come?
Gone are the days of being able to have a squad with internationals in every position, no quality antipodean with a clean record will move from the NRL to SL, even the ‘bad boys’ command marquee wage. Sarg imo is on the better side of average and still has the potential to be challenging for England again.
