| Craig Smith after a very average first season, was absolutely immense. I can't remeber many better during my time watching Wigan.
Danny Sculthorpe was one I was gutted about that never really made it. He was tough, but he had a great rugby brain.

You watched him that day and he was every bit and probably more skilful than his brother. His handling skills were immense and like Paul, he had that ability to bust the line by ducking under a challenge. I think his diabetes may have played a part in him not getting to the very top. It certainly wasn’t a lack of talent.

| Scully was fantastic for us, his offload game was surreal and his go forward quality. It’s a shame he never hit the heights he should have done but as others said it certainly wasn’t down to lack of talent or attitude.
Also got to agree with Rogues about Terry O’Connor, he was very much underrated for us and a great prop forward.

Rogues has daft opinions, according to rogues there will be a young lad in st.pats under 10's who is alex murphy, wally lewis, haney and tom vollenhoven all rolled into one and according to rogues mickey mac is a far superior to james roby. i deal in facts , and the fact is scully senior was a far superior player to his younger, podgier, dirtier little sibling

No you don't, you deal in opinion like everyone else. An opinion I happen to agree with in this instance but an opinion nonetheless How is it that people such as yourself are unable to understand the difference? If you say the score of a certain game was, say 24-12, that would be a fact. If you said that player X or Y was the best player on the field that would be opinion. It's not really that difficult to understand.

Did farrell win back to back man of steel awards like scully ....the only player ever to do it......no , in his book darren lockyear stated the only player the aussies were scared of was paul sculthorpe, in major finals between them the score is scully 2 faz 1 and finally like those other rugby league "legends" farrell, edwards and robinson did scully sell his soul to the twickenham devil for 30 pieces of silver and a ford mondeo .......again no

| Did Paul Sculthorpe ever win the Golden Boot (back when it was a real trophy) as the worlds best player?
It's a shame we won't get to see your reasoned and sensible posts about Wigan anymore. Maybe the mods will give you a lifeline and you'll still be able to post your vitriol on all things Wigan on the VT with the rest of them.

I think bringing Pongia in mid season really helped Smith and brought out the best in him.
When those 2 played together the intensity really ramped up.

| To be fair to Craig Smith didn’t he have a fairly serious ankle injury just before he came to Wigan? Pretty sure he had to have it pinned and this effected his fitness.

| Couldn’t get over how good O’Connor was in that game. Played the full first half, game off for 5 mins in the second.
Immense, Tony Clubb should watch that

I'm sure a number of games have passed Clubb by as he was sat recovering from his 2 drives in 20 minutes.

| I will always give credit to good players whether they play for Saints or not and Sculthorpe was a superb player, absolutely....but Farrell was easily the better player no doubt in my mind. When it came to the international stage i would have had Farrell in the second row and Scully at LF. Farrell in the second row was devastating.

| At their best there wasn't much to choose between Paul Shorpe and Farrell, and although he never won the golden boot award, I always thought Sculthorpe performed better for GB than Farrell. Injuries meant that Sculthorpe's prime was cut short which is probably why Farrell will always rank higher in these kinds of conversations, but at his best he's up there with best we've seen in this country.

Farrell left Wigan at 29 Scully at 31, Farrell was better for me in all departments not taking away from Scully at all as he was one of the best in the world also at his peak.

| Farrell had literally everything (except blistering pace). Defence, step off the left or right, a fend, kicking out of hand and off a tee, offloading, leadership, passion, professionalism and he was a great man off the pitch.
Think it was the 2003 SF vs. Leeds where on one leg he was the best player on the pitch by a mile even with the likes of Rads, Sinfield, McGuire etc. playing.
It would have been a miracle if we had won the 2003 GF from 3rd against that Bradford team that is considered one of the best ever, but we weren't that far off. Even with Lockers and Robinson in the halves who I think were 19/20 years old. We got hammered with penalties and Deacon kicked us to death. Then Leon Pryce assaulted Carney to put him out of the game which was a clear red card but not even a penalty given.
Mike Gregory was an amazing coach.

And amazingly has vanished from the Grand Final Gold highlights package making it look like we simply fell apart. Strange that.
Even more strange, is that the match turning decisions in 2000 are missing as well and we just cut straight from Wigan being on top to Saints winning the game, whereas in 2013 they use about 5 minutes of highlights to show the two wire injuries.
