| I was discussing the games with my mam today (she's 89 years young) and I asked her who she would want to win if it was a Wire v Saints final.
If looks could kill I'd be laid out now. "I never want Saints to win anything" was her reply.

I think Wigan have. Not the Grand Final but the equivalent - in the 1920s or sometime. I seem to remember at the Championship Finals at Wire last year when Oldham lost for the fourth consecutive year, the commentator pointed out that they joined Wigan in being one of only two clubs (at that time) which had lost four championships on the bounce. Of course, we joined the exclusive club just a week later.
I'm only going on what I remember the commentator saying; I haven't checked the accuracy. The comments on here about us losing four on the bounce just reminded me.

Come on.
There comes a time when making the showpiece final isn't good unless you actually win. Constantly losing it is bad.
5 grand final defeats on the trot?
I don't think theres any team in ANY sport with a record like that. You'd go down in history as major grand final chockers, certainly the current mob would. It would be awful. Don't try and dress it up, ''at least we got there'' that doesn't wash when you lose that amount on the trot.
A team could make just one final and win more titles than you have over the past 4 years. WIN.
You must be scared that if you beat wigan, a formiddable wire lie in wait, or even bogey team leeds and a 5th defeat on the bounce is a prospect.

Correct,
Wigan lost 11 - 3 to Oldham in 1910, Oldham 20 - 7 in 1911, Huddersfield 13 - 5 in 1912, and Huddersfield 29 - 2 in 1913.
And before anyone asks, I didn't do the matchday reports.
But it's good of Saints fans to admit there was a game of Rugby League prior to 1996.

Either way it's going to be Saints by 12. don't ask how I know, but you know every team has their day in the sun, time for Wigan to return to the lower end of the top 8 now. Wire to follow suit next year.

Agree whole heartedly. And it annoys me somewhat that Wire bill themselves against Wigan as a derby. Rugby League in the North West has ALWAYS been about Wigan vs Saints. And probably always will. Arguing that Wire aren't pretenders to that rivalry is silly really, they never have, and never will be the Wigan Derby, and its nothing to do with who you'd rather play in the final, give me a choice between a Derby Final or an "A.N. Other" final, and i'll pick the derby final, it makes it more intense in the build up, during the game, and after.
Wigan vs Saints
Comical mutual banter on forums and in town
Mutual "hatred" in the stands through songs and chants, and a mutual desire to sell more than another to make it a sell out
Players given one message to beat the opposition and "that's all that matters"
Rubbing salt in the wounds of, or avoiding friends and colleagues for days after.
Wigan vs Wire
Personal insults on forums and in town
Spitting or throwing of missiles in the stands, or "keep out a pie" campaigns
No message to players aside from "play to win"
Tense atmosphere after a game regardless of the result.
Wigan vs Saints every time for me.

I think you miss the point. Being somebody's rival imo is so much more than just challenging them for a trophy once or twice. Being a rival is a mutual hatred that is built up over years of battling each other for the same trophies or goals. When the teams fans talk to each other they stick the boot in by referring to past famous victories etc etc
