It cost us so much that we had to leave Central Park we payed our players too much money .Budget was that we won the CC when we lost to Salford and stopped the run we were in deficit with the players wages and had to sell the ground.

We sold the ground because Mr Whelan wanted to build a new stadium and not use his money,he could secure funds if he had 2 different sports in one stadium,toyed with the idea with Orrell Union but that was a no go really.So Wigan was left weak with cost of the new stand and the end of our dominance Mr Whelan took his chance bought Latics for a pound bought our debts and got the money for the DW.
We did need to win everything but the new stand crippled us money wise.

Leeds broke the transfer record 3 times from 87 - 91 then poached the most successful English coach of the era from Widnes but yeah, totally one sided.

I’m just going on what all the older fans round here say, as before my ability to understand what was going on off field. Is an unshakable belief amongst most that Wigan somehow cheated in that era and the achievements are thus devalued. But clearly not nearly as simple as that…..!

Older fans are jealous mate that is all ,Leeds broke transfer records as did Stains but to no avail.
Wigan were that good in that era and some other fans still like to believe we cheated/bought the trophies anything so as not to admit Wigans dominance.

The building of the new stand and its subsequent spiraling costs due to piling issues underground and the club having to pour an additional hundreds of thousands of pounds into the project took us to the edge.

Unfortunately we were a victim of bad timing too:

Tesco were searching for a new plot in the town centre.
Crowds were down on years previous.
Maurice had recently left the club.
The DW was being built by Whelan as the Latics were to move away from Springfield Park.

Take those four instances away and we probably would have stayed where we were. Probably with a new board, maybe even Lenagan would still have bought us? We may have even upgraded Central Park bit by bit over the last twenty years (similar to Leeds have done).

But it wasn't to be which is a shame.

now MattyB don't go confusing our visiting forum posters with facts, it just upsets them and spoils their day - taking away their ability to throw all sorts of accusations at the club.
