No interested buyers? Times running out and he'd rather spend more time on a Barbados beach (who'd blame him), what else can he do?

Nothing will change at Latics or for us.
Whelan didn't want to burden his family with the club as it was losing millions per season, but due to changes over the last couple of years it is now on the verge of breaking even and it's debt took off the balance sheet with a share issue. This of course means the team is not as strong but then again they're not the only local team finding it increasingly difficult to stay up, the only question is how long it will take the rest of the league to give up on the hope of challenging United or City, or even the honour of playing teams few have heard of in the Europa League.
This guy is only in his early twenties and runs Vizwear, or someone probably helps him as would happen at the football club. This is good news for both clubs IMO if both can continue as successful businesses at a relatively high level in their respective sports everyone wins. Only Wigan people care about Wigan clubs and that goes for the owners too, we've seen how even the history of Livepool and United is treated with disregard by US owners so what would they care about our clubs.
This is the source of the story.

| Quote ="stillinthepast"In todays Sunday Express Dave Whelan revealed that he intends to step down from Wigan Athletic and hand control to his 21 year old grandson.
He goes on to say it will be officially announced tomorrow in the latest issue of the FC Buisiness Magazine (trade mouthpiece for the football industry)
He also says that his grandson is bright boy and massively keen on soccer,Whelan then says that he may step down as early as the end of the present soccer season.
What effect do Wigan fans think his decision to step down will have on the Warriors?.'"

Thanks for that. A very interesting read.
The Tics' have the highest dependency on TV rights - a staggering 88% of their revenue is made up from it and they have the smallest commercial income in the Premier League at £1.5m.
This all says to me that they've had their impressive, but ultimately meager swansong in the Premier League however they are a club that belongs in the lower divisions. It's time for that inevitability to come to fruition.

| When Latics go down a couple of divisions (cant happen soon enough), and we are the major money earners at the DW, we'll soon see who needs who.
They will then be ripe for a buyout. IL should then buy the club like whelan 'bought' Orrell RUFC, sell their training field for houses, then kick them out of their own ground and let them disappear like whelan did with orrell.

yes, i know that....but the clubs running at a massive loss all the time, which will get worse if/when they get relegated.
so by giving it to family, hes going to incur debts on them.....which makes him an hypocrite imo

yeah it is him i dont think he can see a way out of this mess. i am sure he would of thought latics would have had alot higher attendence than they have at the moment.
does anybody know what latics financial figures where before they was in the prem? when they do get relegated the fan base will dwindle even further. so where does that leave the dw? would they have enough to run the stadium costs? wigan warriors shouldn't keep them afloat with the stadium money.

They get £48m over 4 years in parachute payments should they be relegated, given our turnover is just over £5m a year I don't think they'll be relying on us too much.

Lets just hope theyve managed to negotiate the players contracts so that the £48M isnt wiped away in wages, as on last hearing (in 200icon_cool.gif they were spending £20.6M a year on wages alone. At that rate £48M over 4 years aint going to go far.

| The null and void contracts were when clubs went out of Super League.
Football contracts stay in place.

I'd assume that unless something was stipulated in the contract saying otherwise, that a contract would still stand.

Don't worry the contracts will have relegation clauses. 40% is the general rule of thumb but some clubs have been more than half. Newcastle have been the only club relegated in recent years who didn't have the clauses.
Anyone who is half decent wil be off like a shot anyway with the corresponding transfer fee.

This is a brilliant thread and you've just hit the nail on the head. Uncle Dave is a wiser man now - he honestly thought that if he provided prem league football we would all go along and the rugby would wither away. As a successful businessman he realises he was wrong and has adjusted his attitude and policy appropriately.
