| He's a very good player with the potential to be one of the best in the game but he's not there yet. Really looking forward to how he goes in the internationals, linking up with the likes of Burgess and Ellis.
He's done nothing to be mentioned in the same breath as Hayne, Inglis, Slater, Lockyer etc yet though. The comment on Sky about him and Lockyer was embarrassing, then again, it did come from the same people who proclaimed Paul Wellens as the best FB in the world.

Its premature, but not embarassing. He certainly has the potential to be one of a very small group of English players who can be ranked alongside the great Aussie players of the modern era. He is already much ahead of Wellens at his peak. Sam is a player of great natural gifts and an Edwards-esque will to win. He still hasn't fulfilled all his potential, which isn't a criticism, he just keeps getting better and better - I don't think any of us know just how good he can be but he clearly isn't finished developing yet. His form in recent weeks has been awesome.
The rest of SL must be very worried about next season when he will team up with Finch to work with a sensational pack. I believe that 2011 will be the year when - barring injuries - Sam will write his name in the history books as a legend of Wigan and British RL, in much the same way as Pat Richards has with a season in which he has been the epitome of the complete modern RL winger.

| Quote ="BillyRhino"Bit like Danny Mac on Carmont the other week.....or is it only cheating when it's the opposition?'" Is pulling a player off the ball an edge? NO
Is trapping a guys arm in a position where either the ball will get stripped if he pulls out or get done for holding down an edge? YES
There is a massive diffrence and i aint just saying it cause he's one of our players it's very clever if you cant see it then you know nothing

| Quote ="king warrior"Like people have posted on here before i got spoiled growing up watching all the talent at wigan and there have been some great players that have put that cherry and white jersey, players like edwards, gregory, hanley, offiah, west, farrell the list could go on and on
Sam imo will be better than any of these in 4-5 years time i had a chat with a guy the other month who's watched wigan for over 40 years (i've watched us for 20+) and we both agreed he will be a wigan legend his workrate, step and speed off the mark is second to none plus the fact he reads the game so well
When i see comments off other fans calling all names under the sun it makes me laugh cause it shows he's doing a good job for us and the whole debate about holding the players arm good players in any sport look for an edge and he's got his is it cheating? No not at all it's good thinking'"

It's cheating. He's trying to con the ref and milk a penalty. Simple as!
Easily dealt with by the ref, and if he doesn't, then I'm sure the players will have already worked out that an elbow (accidentally of course) into Tomkins face whist attempting to get back to their feet, may just convince him to mend his ways.
And we all can then get on and enjoy the game.

Pulling someone off the ball like what mcguire did is a yellow card and in some cases a red

It's the responsibilty of both players to regain their feet as quickly as possible.

By holding onto the player though he isn't attempting to regain his feet. Can get penalised for it, full credit to him for doing it though, keep on until he get's caught.

Well you say that but he doesn't seem to be getting penalised for it and the ref's view (as heard from Ganson's own lips) is "if you don't want your arm trapping, don't put it in there!" Seems fair enough to me.
As an aside to this particular argument I remember last season Sean O'Loughlin getting penalised when he couldn't free his arm because Sinfield had it clamped under his arm. This was even MORE obvious than anything Sam does as BOTH PLAYERS WERE STOOD UP!!! Where were the Leeds fans complaining about the blatent cheating of their captain on that occassion? Strangely quiet, as I remember. Even stranger is the fact that Sinfield thought it was ok in that instance too. Weird that, eh?
