I think that needs to be qualified with "at the moment". Let's not forget that, before his injury, he was our standout and most improved player. It's only Amos' sensational form in the position that has kept him out and, quite frankly, on Amos' current form there are no better fullbacks in SL. This is Phelp's first full season with the number 1 jersey and, despite this (and Amos' aside) there are few if any I would take above him. Hodgeson, yes. However he has only a couple years, at best, left in the game. Cam could possibly secure the no. 1 jersey for the next 5. The only other fullback with arguably a better fullback's all round game in SL at the moment is possibly Brent Webb (Clint Greenshields hasn't been very good so far this year off what I've seen) and he is too injury prone for a top earner in my opinion. Phelps/Amos for me.....

And a fair number of Leeds fans are wondering what's happened to Brent Webb, so it's not all that clear cut there either.
I don't think i'd be looking to sign any star from an opposition club who was over 28, I'd not think the big transfer fee involved would be worth the longevity of the player. Eastmond, i'd break the bank for tomorrow - but i'm far happier him being at Saints than going off to RU.

The whole Smith situation was a total farce. And I agree with you, it's like watching paint dry, or watching us according to Mr Kear

Best prop in the league by a mile. Never stops working and has a huge presence.

Yep..I think he would be the best in the NRL too, hes a class act.
It would be brilliant if we signed him, it would p*ss Saints right off and probably ruin them in the process for a good few years as IMO he is doing for them at the moment what Farrell did for us in his last few years at the club.

| here's one from leftfield... Thomas Bosc. Yes I know we have Sam but Bosc always seems to be the 'organising' half for Catalans and his kicking game is excellent.
He'd allow Sam to do what he does best and be spontaneous while giving us that element of control we sometimes lack, even now (although given our current form long may this lack of control go on )
All that and it would give us another place kicker

| Rule out the over 30's
We've got enough imports
We're fine in the back row, full back and wing.
So it would be the best of the remaining British crop - Saints would never sell Eastmond or Graham, so what about Andy Lynch, Crabtree or Shenton; I would also like to see what McGuire would make of McCarthy-Scarsbrook.

Personally I don't rate Bosc at all.
Good kicker, average player IMO.

Wouldn't necessarily disagree with your assessment but you need a few steady eddies along the lines of Mick Cassidy to free up your creative players to do what they do.

That has to be Eastmond.

| Kyle Eastmond.
Him and Tomkins were the best for their age groups and still are. It would be frightening to see these two lads playing in the same side.
If I was Ian Lenagan/Mike MaGuire I would seriously consider having a chat with Martin Offiah about getting this lad at Wigan. He's a Wigan fan after all. Let's not miss out him like we did Gleeson.

He did only sign a 1 year deal with Saints.
When ever the lad signs a new contract is bound to be a whopper, whether it's with Saints, Rugby Union or maybe even us.

It's a long shot sadly.
Joe Mellor could steal the limelight when he gets fit and some game time.

I've always been impressed when ever I've seen Mellor play, granted it was only 5 times last year but he looked very good to me. However some posters don't seem to see him in the same light as I or you do.

Why?
We have 2 of the top 5 fullbacks in the comp. Surely we have other areas that could be improved more so than #1. In any case, Roberts is better.

His reply was that he wouldn't sign anyone.

The kind of respectfully diplomatic response I'd expect TBH. The position we're in at the moment it wouldn't benefit current squad members to hear SW saying he'd rather have someone else and would also invite the lazy hacks in the media to create a "Wigan want (enter name here) frenzy". Ask SW the same question one to one stood at the bar over a pint and I'm sure the response would be very different.
For my vote I'd go Eastmond. As someone else said this question was asked a few years ago and I said Peacock back then.
