I find it extremely sad TBH... I have a bit of banter with Latics fans... but some people are so angry its sad... I love rugby and have done for 20 odd years... but I have also frequented to the jjb and springfield park to watch the latics on occasions and although I cant get as passionate as I do for the rugby... I still enjoyed myself...
The whole problem between latics/warriors is partly down to "tribalism". We as human beings... have an natural desire to be part of a group or tribe... Whether it be rugby, football, churches, chess club tiddlewinks.... etc... This is our natural urge and when tribes are formed they create belief streams.. and these are reassured by the "group"... therefore hatred breeds by a pure lack of understanding between groups and breeds the hatred even further... we see it in all walks of life whether is chav groups on the street corner or within the office/workplace.... I think we human beings believe we are above other animal species... but when you examine us closely we are nothing but animals ourselves with our own broad set of characteristics... there is always going to be exceptions to the rule....
The sad things is that although many within both clubs won't admit it... neither the football or the rugby is going to consistently fill the stadium while the disrespect/animosity between the fans of the two clubs remains...
Does part of the problem also lie with the fact that many fans of the latics are also supporters of other local rugby teams such as St helens/wire/widnes etc??..
To be accepted into a club you have to feel part of the club... Should we be "Men" enough to hold out the olive branch?

I'd say it works the other in the majority. Go back to the 80's & 90's, most footballing supporting Wiganers had families who'd supported Man U, Liverpool and Everton and had done for generations, all this was going on whilst Latics struggled to get 2,500 at SP. I know loads that 'jumped on the Latics bandwagon' when they arrived in the Prem, majority of which have gone back to Man U, Liverpool now...etc.

I know a few who were Spurs (Why, I still don't now) ManU and Evertons fans, who are now Latics through and through...Fair play to em... but do liverpool and united fans hate wigan... not really(maybe a few), but wire/saints fans dislike us... which I guess adds to a few to the WiganW hatred bandwagon!!!

There's an added problem now. Whelan.
Despite the good things he did for the RL in the past, what happened last year was seen as a betrayal of the club and proof positive that all the 'support' he's given us in the past was little more than an attempt to placate us while in the background he worked on his real project - making Latics into the town's main sports club.
I don't think there'll ever be a coming together of these clans while Whelan is involved.

Absolutely hilarious reading!
Clear proof that the knuckle-draggers are utterly and completely obsessed with all things WRLFC.
Can you imagine any other supposedly Premier League standard team's supporters being so wrapped-up in bitterness towards a club not even playing the same sport?
Its a bit sad and pathetic really [size=75(still funny though!).[/size

I dont think thats even relevant to be honest.
Personally, i just dont like football, and wouldnt go to watch the Statics if you paid me in, bought drinks all day, and presented me with a signed shirt at the end of it!
I dont dislike the towns football team - I just have no interest at all in what happens to them.
Its really only the ridiculous attitude towards WRLFC, by some of the football fans that brings WAFC into my thoughts in any way, shape, or form.

Talk about spitting the dummy out. Some highlights for those who cba reading the thread:
1. Having 40% of our fans from outside the town is a bad thing apparantly.
2. If CP was redeveloped for both teams no 'tics fans would go.
3. To them, having a stand named after Billy B is the same as calling a stand at Anfield the Dixie Dean Stand.
4. One of them is pleased as a kid in sweet shop to be sat in the West Stand on a blue seat

Yes, but if only 60% of our fanbase is from Wigan and 80% of Latics' is from Wigan then is Wigan a rugby or football town?
Both sides get around the same amount of HOME fans every week. Wigan is a SPORTING town. Simple as that.

Well what defines a legend? Scoring the goals to take you to the PL? Scoring the goals to keep you there? Scoring the goals to take you to your first major cup final (including a last minute winner in the semi)?
JR ticks all them boxes. Like most players though he moved to a 'bigger' club who then finished below us in the league.

A legend is someone who consistently serves a club for the majority of their career who bleeds the colour of the club, not someone who wins you a few matches over 2 years, would you consider Barrett a Wigan 'Legend' Lyon a Saints 'Legend' legends are players like Kris Radlinski, Shaun Edwards and Billy Boston. Wigan Athletic have no players past or present of this type. Hence the 'Springfield Park Stand'

We do. Just not modern day.
This is the online definition of a legend:
a nonhistorical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly accepted as historical.
2. the body of stories of this kind, esp. as they relate to a particular people, group, or clan: the winning of the West in American legend.
3. an inscription, esp. on a coat of arms, on a monument, under a picture, or the like.
4. a table on a map, chart, or the like, listing and explaining the symbols used. Compare key 1 (def. .
5. Numismatics. inscription (def. .
[i6. a collection of stories about an admirable person.
7. a person who is the of such stories: She became a legend in her own lifetime.[/i
8. Archaic. a story of the life of a saint, esp. one stressing the miraculous or unrecorded deeds of the saint.
9. Obsolete. a collection of such stories or stories like them.
Due to the points I made I would say JR could be classed as a Latics legend.

| Wigan will always truly be a Rugby League town, for the person who just questioned that.
As for the topic, well I personally don't think we'll move for a long, long time. Not unless Whelan does something insanely stupid and we HAVE to. I wouldn't want to, either; cracking walking distance for me every home game! Haha.

I like the place, even if there is next to no atmosphere.
Couple in Jawbone beforehand before wandering down. Same again after game.
