Excellent - recently there was an RL day in Nottingham with hundreds of kids at all ages involved with the local amateur club - not one scout from a pro club was in attendance. If we assume that the raw product from Wigan is genetically no better than others we could be tapping into a huge pool of talent by forming a relationship with these clubs (it was tried with Gloucester through Simon Houghton's family connections several years ago but I doubt it was fully seen through).

I've noticed that Nottingham Outlaws have had five players whom have all turned professional within the last five months.

Surely that's an indication that there must be talent down there?

We need to spread the net far and wide and as I said look at "athletic kids" who we could turn into Rugby League players, regardless of whatever sport they are playing now.

Its something I have been screaming at all the clubs i have been at but they all seem too busy thinking they are going to unviel the next Inglis in there own back garden.

You have to look away from the "heartlands" and you have to look cross discipline rugby league players first and foremeost MUST be athletes, generally you have a good chance of coaching the rest. It is unlikely you will unearth a half/hooker unless you dip into Union but most other positions i think are fair game when it comes to matching athletes to playing them and coaching the skills required.

This is very true, there are some great athletic kids in the blackpool area for example, along with some talented rugby players, but no-one bothers turning up to see any games, the only time I have seen a scout at one of my games it was away to wigan st pats in the cup and that was just to monitor one of their players :s it is extremely frustrating for all involved and has resulted in 3/4 of the squad I played with last year in quitting the sport, as no-one seems to take any interest in players outside the heartlands.

I don't think it's as simple as that to be honest. Would love to be proved wrong tho.

Last night at the Riversiders, Mick Hogan announced that they are forging ahead with the new merchandising lines. They have secured a deal with latics for the shop near the front of the stadium (west stand). There is to be more training kit brought out around Oct/Nov and the new home and away shirts BEFORE christmas.

As for Pie N Peas tickets in the past cost £4 when we had them. These tickets are £2.

Scouting in Blackpool area. I know that Stains look at Blackpool area - they've been there a few times looking at a few of the lads. I agree the scouts need to get away from the bars at Pats and Judes on a sunday morning.

The scouts need to also be looking at other sports. Brian Carney coming from Gaelic football is a great example.

Athletics, bascketball, football, union all sports where athletes who may be very well suited to our game are running round, especially the first 2 sports which by the very nature of there core skills ensure powerfull athletes are playing the sport.

Bit of a bad example but Penny is from a Basketball background, its a sport that athletically shares many of the same traits as rugby league, eg power endurance.
