| Quote ="Dai Jones"Quote ="BrisbaneRhino"Not sure about straight line speed - I remember Offiah lost a race with Lee Onduryn (sp?) in Aus years ago.
Not sure about the genuineness of that race. Martin Dermott once told me the GB lads did very well at the bookies from that one...if you watch Offiah he doesn't exactly seem to be busting a gut in the sprint, when it came to the match he raced past Oudenryn for two tries without much of a problem.
On the '88 tour, Offiah and Henderson Gill raced Dale Shearer and Andrew 'ET' Ettingshausen at an old greyhound stadium in Sydney and Offiah won so easily the comment in the Aussie press at the time was that "only an actual greyhound could have given Offiah a race at all"
Steve Renouf in his prime was a 10.9 man supposedly and I once saw our former winger Darren Williams (1 game for 1st team in early 90s) run 11.00, proper electronically timed, on an athletics track, no illegal wind at the age of 17'" '"
That's nothing. Our "own" jonh is faster than that.

Correct, whats the problem with that?
I have several district records, Yorkshire Caps and HMC titles to prove it from my days as an athlete with Wakefield Harriers. Also clocked the time in the P.E. Practical for A level. Was only 9 stone back then, so much less of me to shift at the time.
I was by far the fastest player at my pro club, which is why i was signed, as i can assure you it was not for my powerful line busting runs and offloads.
Dont assume everyone was the fat kid to get picked at school.

You have now posted that TWICE. It wasn't funny the first time, now take your 12 fingers back over to the Wire board.

| Quote ="Mugwump"Is this the try Offiah scores in the far right corner? I'm afraid you are wrong. If you watch the replay again you'll notice Preston is done by Offiah's body swerve (moving away from the sticks toward the corner flag) - NOT his pace.
At the very least Preston was holding his own with Offiah. More likely he was catching him (causing Offiah to shift direction quickly). That said, it's not a good idea to compare pace in such fashion as the man with the ball is always encumbered.
Preston was an extremely fast player who also possessed a good swerve (a skill which at the moment seems on the verge of extinction), but that's where comparisons end. He was an enormously limited player (poor under the high ball, weak in defence etc.) whereas Offiah was the complete package.'"
Sam Tomkins is bringing the swerve back! It can be a very useful skill to break the line or beat a defender.

| The best players are those who combine swerve with change of pace. It completely flummoxes front-on defenders. Darren Albert had a pretty good swerve, but modest change of pace. That, and a lack of ... I don't know ... confidence ... ego ... whatever, meant he didn't realise his full potential (although, he is one of the very few speedsters I've seen who had no weaknesses in his game - attack and defence - at all).
Offiah and Preston both had an excellent swerve and change of pace. Additionally, Offiah could step whereas Preston could not.
Other players who had an excellent swerve and change of pace: Davies, Drummond, Ledger, Slater & Minichiello (perhaps there's an argument that these skills are a pre-requisite for full-back).

This is crucial, but for some reason rarely coached, i have no idea why not.

He says that Jack Hilton,ex-Wigan winger and who was later a Wigan director, could 'shift a bit' as well.

They are coached - at least by some. But I think you need a certain kind of personality to apply these skills regularly. Generally speaking it's those who have a bit of an ego that have a crack at an opponent in such fashion. And you have to remember that kids are under enormous pressure not to make mistakes when they graduate to the first team. If they apply either or both (often high-risk maneuvers) and feck up it could mean being dropped back into the reserves. And you don't get too many return tickets from there. So kids tend to play it 'safe'. After two or three years of playing it safe (in order to secure a jersey and a contract) many kids simply forget these moves entirely.

it has been hard of late to distinguish between which club has the most backwards fans, its still a close call between Wire and Salford, but many more comments like this and you may well tip the scales in the wolves favour. On the plus side it may well mean you finally walk away with a title in 09. Most backward chav moron fans 2009.....year of the wolf.

Trust me change of pace and clicking through the gears in a short space of time is something i have rarely seen coached in league, and as much as it will rile a few, every union club i played at, at least recognised the importance of it.

No problem at all what's your worry?
Quite ironic really. My game was based on the ability to burst through the line and offload.
Maybe explains our differences on here
