| Quote ="Alex BP'"The charge down try wasn't entirely Smith's fault.
He was given the ball point blank without any Wigan players/forwards acting as ''blockers''. He was completely wide open and had to use his step to evade the first fast approaching defender before trying to get some kind of kick away under huge pressure.
I'd put it down to a lack of concentration/laziness from his team mates.'"
Also the Wigan fullback was nowhere in sit to "clean it up" in the way HKR did when Wigan charged their kick down.
It was still a poor kick though.

| Quote ="warriorweed"Alex, don't know you but I know you sit in the West stand from reading your posts on here.
When Smith put in the kick that got charged down he appeared to get up and shout something accross at the bench and throw his hands up at the same time and looked generally upset about something.
Sitting in the South it was hard to see what the outburst was about as I thought it was a bit strange at the time considering he had made the error.- just wondering if you could shed some light on it'"
It seemed as though he was complaining about exactly what I put in my post.
His reaction and body language seemed to say ''Well, what was I supposed to do?!''

If this is the case why has he not been drafted to the relevant ranks within the wigan youth set up or that of any other professional club

Harsh to blame Phelps, he was drifting towards the other side to chase the kick, he almost made it back which was a decent effort.

| Come off it, he had hours to kick that ball. In fact enough time for me to realise in real time that he as going to step when he really didn't need too.
I realise the kick isn't the main point, and I'm under no illusion that other players weren't blameless. Although If you watch Smith and he sets up his deep line off him that he can execute his set moves and spray his passes he's laughing. If he is caught having to think on his feet he struggles.
Another classic example was when the ball flicked out for an eternity infront of the opposition's sticks in the first half. Smith clearly had no idea what to do with it.
As an out and out scrum half he's meant to have a lot of structural sense from first receiver and a good kicking game. When put under the kosh tonight he lost both of those. I know my Lee Briers statement was a bit harsh but it's a trait they both have in common.

| Quote ="lothlorian"look outside the box fella. he is 19 years old, no experience of super league till recently, playing amatuer rugby in the winter is no comparison to winter conditions against a team that sits top of super league. riddell, has played in the hardest competition in the world and is pretty much a veteran, and if you think it doesn;t rain like that in oz, have a look at the early rounds of the nrl this season. tonight was going to be a slog. in ainscough and sam we are trying to develop two stars of the future. preparing them physically and mentally, creating the confidence to perform in front of probably the most expectant set of fans world wide. sam slipping and sliding, dropping the ball, getting hit time and time again by a big set is not something that will build him. we needed experience tonight, not a lad trying to make a name for himself, playing him would have done more damage than good imo. we have to look after our stars of the future and develop them at the right pace. im not a fan of noble, but right choice tonight'"
I appreciate they need to be brought through slowly and correctly. We both want what is best for Sam and Ainy.
However to change a winning team that was also in some really good form I find utterly stupid. The combinations between the pivots is the most important on the pitch without doubt and to change them when they are playing well I find bemusing. If he was going to give Sam a rest why not wait till the Salford or Celtic league games in a few weeks when we wouldn't have needed Sam as much instead of sitting him out of a game which was huge for us last night.
Also you really can't make an argument for Riddell being more used to those conditions than Sam as he is quite simply not and he showed it on the field.

Although has an awesome array of passes and a decent kicking game, if you take him out of his comfort zone he dies.
Ask him to do something off the cuff, put him under pressure and he bottles it and panics.
As soon as he does something really bad he shuts up and goes hiding. The team lose their shape be had the injury time gone on for another 40 mins, we still wouldn't have scored.
He's a poor mans Lee Briers and that's saying somet.'"
Spot on, he's never taken the line on once since he came. As a stand off he's pathetic, and he doesn't want to be here. Cant wait for him to go at the end of the year. Next season, Tommy 9, S. Tomkins 7, new stand off.

| Tim Smith was awful last night and summed his night up by being that cack scared of getting hit after kicking the ball he ran it up a blind alley and cost us 6 points.
He's a fair weather player who needs his pack to be totally on top.
To be fair to the lad though some of the passes he recieved close to the KR line in the second half were appalling and defenders were on him before he could bend down to pick them up.
Just hope the weathers better at Wire!

| I think Noble knew it was going to be a bruiser and needed the extra weight on the pitch, that first 40 was the hardest 40 ive seen in a long time some of the hits were out of this world from both teams. Sam would of been brilliant to bring on in the last 20 but you cant have 5 subs.

I thought the first half was the best half of rugby i've seen for a long time.
It was so intense it was truely superb and the hits were fantastic.
State of origin style defence for 40 minutes.

Like Noble said it's hard not to look back on that but we still should have won the game.
The tackling seemed to take more out of us even though the majority of the big hits were on them which is a worry.

That because Pats have the best set-up and the best players are therefore attracted to the club.

Of course they were. The player the conditions were not right for were Smith - a passer. Tomkins is a running type of half back and in the rain that is what you want not someone trying to spray long passes about. Tomkins would have been ideal.
