In all the years (and there's a lot!) of going on trips or hoildays, here or abroad, whenever I've met someone and mentioned living in, or coming from, Wigan, no one has ever linked it with Northern Soul, the rugby team or even Latics!, yes, but never Northern Soul.

Or Uncle Joe's mint balls, of course...

I prefer those to Northern Soul !!!!!

So.....nothing at all been said post flag meeting. I'm assuming there was a lock in situation and they are still there.

We escaped at around 10:30.

Someone give us a detailed update!

Good venue for the meeting and a decent spread put on by the landlady (who is a Saints fan! In the heart of Wigan Rugby mad Swinley, I know).
About 15 turned up including a few new faces which was good to see.
Decision made to put what money we have at the moment (£120) towards the Formby Flag. That flag costs £160 so we’ve still a bit to raise.

Phase 1 practically complete now as the gantry will be full when those flags on order or about to be ordered arrive.

Heated discussion about Phase 2 and what that should involve. A difference of opinion between going over to the North Stand, trying to turn the South into something resembling the Kop on a big European night i.e. large flags on poles within the stand and a combination of the two.

We agreed to get some quotes for the Kop style flags before making a final decision. We will also need to consult the club about this and for those worried about it obstructing their view, the idea is to use them at times like when the team takes to the pitch and at the end of a game, not during the game. The club want to contribute towards a flag so maybe let them do one over the North Stand. ‘This is Wigan – Forever In Our Shadow’ is my favourite design for that one!

We then talked about trying other ideas besides the flags such as bar scarves. 4000 bar scarves given away at the turnstiles at the Saints game for example. Maybe the club can get their hand in their pocket for this. I think Jukes agreed to contact them about this?

I said on here a few weeks ago they should do something like this. The latics gave out flags against Bolton. They got the sponsor on board so it probably didn't cost much!

I like the forever in our shadow idea! It would have to be pretty big though!

I love the scarf idea, I was looking into myself and got a quote for £4.00 per scarf.

I like the ''THIS IS WIGAN'' idea, but in regards to the 'FOREVER IN OUR SHADOW'' part, I think it's a bit risky if it's a flag solely donated from the club. To me it sounds slightly disrespectful and unprofessional to be coming from the club itself.

True though. Might be one we fund then. I just think it would be hilarious for those in the South/East/West stands to see the North Stand packed with Wire or Saints fans beneath a flag which reads FOREVER IN OUR SHADOW

yes, I really hope the bar scarf idea goes ahead and im glad I brought it up on the night now. I cant see the kop style big flags being too expensive, as I said its only large sheets of material stichted together, We really have achieved so much this season already and the future plans are even more exciting now.

It's been fantastic how well this has taken off, from what we are hearing the club/players are impressed with whats been achieved in such a short space of time, lets hope some of the other fund raising ideas get the go ahead, they will make more people feel involved, its been something thats been missing at the club for years now, its getting bigger and better with more to come !!!!


p.s. I still think my idea to have the next meeting in Benidorm is a winner !!!!!!!!!!!

Even if people don't make the NS connection the message is clear & relevant. It's like the My first My last My Everything flag. The song has nothing to do with Wigan but the message is relevant for many fans as that's how they feel about the club. I reckon lots of people (home & away fans) would make the connection between Wigan RL & Wigan Casino.
