I too have reservations about this potential signing, especially if it involves exchanging Goulding. But just to rant on and on about Gleeson not being good enough, being a crap defender, uninterested, etc, is making a case that is simply not borne out by the facts.



You're entitled to your opinion of course, but very few, I'd imagine, who watch the British game regularly will share it. In fact, this notion of "he's not good enough for Wigan" - when you're talking about a regular Great Britain centre, who is only 28, and is still head and shoulders above most other British centres - is painfully representative of an attitude that has bedevilled the Wigan fans and subsequently the entire club for years now. We really need to get out of this state of mind created in the 1990s, wherein nothing less than the best in the world will do for us. That ambition will never be realised in the age of the salary cap.



To fit a player of Martin Gleeson's calibre (and presumably, cost) into what's already a healthy-sized SL squad, would be a remarkable feat of manoueviring by the club's bosses.



That said, I reiterate that I'd consider losing Goulding permanently a steep price to pay (though not necessarily TOO steep - some of us have clearly been lulled into believing that signing 'young British' is more important than signing 'quality').



As for the bit about the coach, I don't think you'll get too many arguments about that. But buying in a new international centre - when we've currently only got one real centre at the club - is not likely to prevent us replacing Noble when the time arrives.

i honestly think it is, lenegan aint gonna get rid of his best mate, this just smacks of desperation, i really dont think a is what we need, we have gone for the most expensive name we could go for just to divert attention somewhere else, its just not a good signing at all

I'm sorry but theres no chance your getting Gleeson in exchange for Goulding and Mathers, its cash or no deal. 150k should cover it.

I can't believe that anybody is questioning Gleeson's ability. He has had (and may still have, I don't know) issues and clearly isn't happy at Wire but on his day, he's right up there.



I had the opportunity in Oz to discuss the World Cup with several current NRL coaches and they all spoke highly of just two England players - Gleeson and Ellis. They're not necessarily right of course but a pattern emerges.....

Gleeson's coming to Wigan!!

Well you paid 200K for a 24 year old Martin Gleeson.



He is now 28 turning 29 in 6 weeks - we should be looking to get three years out of him.

So anything around 100K would be too much IMO.



I can tell you now Wigan will NOT pay a fee for Gleeson. Not to mention we need to get rid of players to make room for him.

He signed an extension in 2007 till 2011

The average wage for an RL player is 60K.

They are rough estimates. Maybe 40-50K - 60K for Goulding does seem a bit steep.

The Gleeson wage is apparently true, the others I have guessed at and if you think about they can't be far off considering the rumour.

His contract ends November 2010, which is 19months away. He was being granted a release at the end of the season if he could find a NRL club.

Fair play thought he was off contract at the end of this year.



£100k seems a reasonable price for both teams i would say, not that i think it will do down that route for one minute.

The days where Wigan could/would pay big transfer fees for players are long gone.

i've no problems with the mathers(other than he probably isn't currently worth it) but 60k for goulding? fringe player junior player on 60k?



we got called for giving reardon 85k when we signed him from bradford, GB player, grand final winner and harry sunderland medal winner as well.

Forgot that part, i don't think Goulding is a suitable replacement, as for Mathers..........
