| Cant quite see what the problem is?
Its not as if Madge is the type who is constantly churning out soundbites like Brown, Smith, Agar etc.
He has never given the press anything and they dislike him for that. The black out has just given the petty little children a reason to show this.
Non story as far as i am concerned.
I am genuinely saddened by the pettiness of a lot of RL "fans". People go on about the RL family, but i cant see it. Our sport is supported by a fickle bunch of provincial sissies who like nothing better than a snide little hate campaign.
It has gotten to the stage that you only expect reasonable posts from a handful of individual posters from other boards. Chances are the rest are talking b0ll0k$.

Interesting times.'"
Nearly every RL Journo is having a whinge. And Garry Schofield. It's got everyone talking though, done more for RL today than anyone or anything else. I can see where they are coming from, and it does make their job a bit more difficult, but maybe they could talk about the match in general? they dont have to talk to players to talk about a match. Obviously it makes life easier though. Maybe they might have to do some research into the games instead of just randomly quoting people all week

| Quote ="Angelus"George Riley has his 2 cents on twitter
"Can't abide Maguire's Wigan press blackout."Important week" for them yes but the constant battle to get national profile for RL is tough too"
Later replied with "[ui think there is an element of panic and rightly so[/u"
Why are people so bothered? I cant believe a media person seems to think some Wigan players not talking to the press is going to wipe out the profile of RL for a week. There's other teams and other people involved this week you know.
Wouldnt call it panic either, but what do i know?'"
Great stuff. Suspiciously reminiscent of Andy Wilson's doubts about "the wobbling Warriors" at this time last year, and that pillock in the Yorkshire Evening Post who writes whatever Gary Hetherington tells him, who in last year's play-offs commended Leeds for their adversarial stance in the week leading up to the semi, criticised Wigan for having no bottle to respond, and then kept his gob well and truly shut when Leeds were knocked out.
Let's remember that the average RL journo gave Danny McGuire a vote for Lance Todd in the Cup Final. Work that one out if you can, without either casting doubt on his sanity, his common sense or his ability to do his job without being hampered by a parochial bias that borders on the completely juvenile.
RL journalists are an absolute joke, and have been for as long as I've been reading the newspapers.

| Dave Woods is being particularly moronic about it.
The journos seen to have failed to grasp that Madge's commitment is to Wigan and to do what he feels will have the best results for his club - not keep half a dozen hacks satisfied with some tired clichés that they can trot out.

| Had my say on Twitter lol. I was being tongue in cheek a bit but still.......
Quote Continued amusement at this fuss over Madge's decision to blackout the media. Listen we (us fans) are the priority not you media! End of!
'"
Quote At the end of the day for the first time in 2 years Madge has given the journos a story to report. They should be grateful!
'"
Quote Talk is cheap anyway. I remember this classic from Sean O'Loughlin ahead of Millennium Magic 2008 - "Last year we didn’t get the result we wanted against St Helens but we’ll be going all out to put that right." - Pfft yeah "all out". We lost 57-16 to Saints in the most miserable day of my rugby supporting life!'"

Most of whom would struggle to hold down at job in the real journalistic world as there they wouldn't get their 'stories' spoon-fed to them, and would have to trot out more than a couple of column-inches each week.
Meanwhile, here's a brief but amusing exchange on the same subject, freely lifted from TotalRL.
Some pratt called Doghead: "You will have to explain to the Wigan players 'media'."
Riding Pie: "We can book a larger room and explain it to the RFL at the same time."

| Says a lot about Wigan's standing in the game that a blackout gets more coverage than other teams' press conferences.
Let's be honest we have saved the playoffs from complete boredom and failure since 07.
06 - Without us everything went boringly to plan, McManus complained that Wigan had got more coverage for the great escape than they had for doing the double.
07 - The comeback from 6-30 at Bradford, went to final eliminator from sneaked 6th (last then) place, everyone sprouted beards (mostly the men).
08 - Overcame Whelan, ran in 50 in France the week after Cats had put 50 on Wire, ran Leeds close.
09 - Final elim again, just a piece of professionalism from Longy away from a possible Grand Final, Noble axed.
10 - Winners the hard way after losing at home in the 1st round.
11 - Don't know yet but whatever good or bad we will generate more interest than anyone else.

Quote wiganrlfans cherryandwhite.co.uk
RT @DaveWoodsSport: Where do you get stories from? Conjure them from thin air? <---- Well Dave "Nosey" Parker has been doing it for years!

The way the journalists have been going on twitter just leaves me thinking that they've lost all sense of reality of Rugby League life outside of the press boxes they all sit together in. Perhaps understandable, some have been sitting in those press boxes since the 1990s and before!

You can't? It's quite simple. The very few RL journalists left in jobs work bloody hard to get any kind of media coverage at all for the sport, especially in the national press.
Incidentally, Maguire will have given an interview to Sky because he is contractually obliged to do so. That's part of the deal with Sky. No Sky access; no Sky money. But Sky already covers League so there is no loss there. However, in all the other media those journalists you are berating have a fight on their hands just to get a column.
So now they can't get any build up to your match on Sunday or whenever it is that the Latics aren't playing. I'd say that was a pity, in the wider RL context.

Pretty much.
Most of the best games have featured us along with a couple of good ones between Saints and Leeds, other than that some games have been boring and poor quality.

If they can't find something to write about without a few boring and predictable quotes from players then those 'journalists' really are stealing a living. Don't kid yourself into thinking they have a tough job. Most people would kill to have a job as good as theirs and there are plenty of writers who are well past their best but still get paid to write their dross. Most RL journalism is pretty poor.

It's one week in a whole year. It's not like we don't accomodate for the rest of the season. Only last week Sean O'Loughlin spent two hours live on BBC Radio Manchester for their "Rugby League Extra" show. One weeks silence is hardly disrespectful to them.
Anyway, Michael Maguire did his weekly press conference to them as normal so they had stuff to work on. I suspect the real reason they are kicking up a fuss is because in 2 years Madge has barely given them a story to work on. So why argue when he finally gives them something to bite with?

Madge has done the right thing, everyone is talking about the media blackout and not our wobbling end to the season.

Madge obviously picked up a few mind game tips when Fergie was over the other week before the CC Final.
Pissypants Central doesn't come close tonight on Twitter. A big well done to the many Wigan (and a few others it has to be said) fans who have slapped them all over the place.

So they can only get a story for the game if they speak to a couple of players? As that is the only thing that isn't happening this week as Maguire did the usual press conference this morning. Get a grip.

| This has been a briliant move by Madge.
The RL world is now in a frenzy.
They just can't cope with Madge's brilliance though. On the Wire board they are so worked up about Maguire that some people have completely lost their heads - in their "Win at all costs" thread they are comparing Madge with Don Revie and the Bodyline series. MM's wins are apparently tainted and he is "despised". My favourite posts though are from the Wire fan that has no idea of the status of Souths in RL.

Makes you wonder about the short term memory of fans; jump all over another teams approach to the game. I remember and I am going back some time now a coach demanding that fans who barrack a player for his dog loving persuits to be banned from the ground.
