Briers will be impossible to replace the guy is just so unique, there are great half backs but Briers is a complete maverick and unreadable. Forget if you hate him or not the guy is a talent and i'll be gutted when he finishes.

I think the point being made is not whether they're good enough or not (Hodgeson most certainly is!) but that they are more suseptible to injuries. Look at Longy over at Hull. Out for 6 games already this season for various reasons and surely lending some credence to Saints decision that he wasn't worth a longer deal. Hodgeson too has already spent time on the sidelines this season. It's fine if you have good cover (is your young full back ready for SL for example?) but if not then it becomes more risky to give longer deals to older players. That's not to say all older players suffer the same, of course, but as a rule of thumb it's not far off the mark.

No one doubts that it's a gamble but if you are going to gamble then the current MOS is, imo worth a try.

I agree. If it works out it could turn out to be the missing part of the puzzle for Wire. As you say, a bit of a gamble though. For the money he will presumably be on I'm sure a younger player of equal ability would be available from Aus. It's not as though he's non-quota. Over the course of a 2 year deal (if that's what happens) it could certainly prove to be a mixed bag.

I hope Huddersfield put faith in Cudjo as a replacement, given game time at 1 I think he could be an International class player in a position that causes us some problems.

I imagine that's why there letting him go isn't it? Move him to fullback, Brough replaces him taking the conversions, bring in a new winger on a lot less money than Hodgson would have wanted.

Plus with the quota coming down I imagine it's seen as an even greater risk as you want your quota players to be playing as much as possible. At his age I can't see him getting at most 3/4's of a season in in 2 years time.

Remember we've never actually "Broken" the cap we've gone against the "spirit of it".

We are just wondering how it would be possible for Wire to get Hodgson under the cap considering the big earners you already have. I mean think about this these are just my guesses:

Morley - Probably about 150k
King - 200-300k maybe (didn't he reject 200k from us to go to Wire?)
Andersons - 80-100k each easy
Carvell - 80-100k maybe more
Myler - Over 100k as he rejected a "six figure sum from Salford"

Thats not far from a million by itself. Add to this I know a lad who plays for Wire who tells me what he's on and what some of the other young players are on and I dont see how it will be possible even with the removal of Mathers to get Hodgson under the cap unless you get him on a bargain contract which is unlikely as the extension he's rejected will of been on his current deal which will be well in excess of 100k probably closer to 200k.
