Is this a serious rumour? Is Griffin likely to sign?
If we sign Griffin Lenegan had better have signed a world class prop from Aus.
And even then Griffin is a crap signing.'"
I don't think he'd be a complete crap signing.
He'd offer us much more in going forward then most of our current props, should imagine it'll only be till the end of the season, so why not?

Pathetic from Lenegan if true.
I haven't seen a lot of Griffin admittedly however, what I have seen of him tells me he isn't the answer to our problems.
In fact, is he even any better than Coley, even if he is a couple of years younger?
If we sign Griffin and no other prop then we have another write off of a season.
If we sign Griffin and a higher quality prop then one of Prescott or O'Carroll is going to have to go at the end of this season. I'd rather give both a chance this year and next rather than be rushed into a decision due to signing Darrell Griffin!

He's played 4 less games then Coley to be fair but if he were to be signed for this year or next he should only be regarded as 4th choice prop and for next year we'd defo still need another high class prop to play alongside him, Fielden and Feka.
Heres a comparison with a man i'd regard as Saints 4th prop(even though he starts the games i'd say he's about 4th in the quality ranking) -
www.superleague.co.uk/statistics ... eason=2009
I'd say Griffin comes out on top overall considering he's played 4 less games.

If you look at the stats against Coley, per game Coley comes out on top in almost all departments. Wage dependant, I'd rather keep Coley than sign Griffin, at least he's already here and settled.
In reality though, we should have one of Prescott or O'Carroll as fourth choice prop. Not some 30 year old.

Prescott needs a loan deal away from the expectations of the Wigan fans on his back to help him develop.
and O'Carroll, well your'll be lucky to see him play at the start of next season

I'd rather keep Coley aswell tbh especially considering he could play backrow if needed but i don't think Griffin would be a nightmare signing if it was only made for him to be a squad player.
If he were signed as our only prop signing for 2010 we're screwed.

My point exactly, you have plenty of props of his quality, but they are younger and are at least passionate about wigan

Fielden
Paleaaesina
New Prop (at least we fecking better be!)
Prescott
O'Carroll
Davies

No not in the slightest but what i'm trying to say is that every signing a club makes can't be 'world class' if they're aiming at building a competative 'squad'.
He isn't world class by any means but if he's cheap and he puts pressure on Fielden, Feka and Co and we can afford it then why not.
Like i say they if he got signed to be a front line player for us we're well and truely on the scrap heap...................we'll have fallen further then i ever imagined.

I maintain that the wigan name is, as shown with Barrett's signing still big enough to get the very cream from Oz, i just dont think your current chairman is prepared to pay for it

I would agree.
Time to bring back Mo. Or a new takeover from the fans?

New Prop (Aussie/NZ)
New Prop (SL Based)
IMO
Prescott needs the loan deal
O'Carroll will have to prove himself to win a first team spot back after a while out, mid season he'll be back in.
Davies isn't yet ready

Our last chairman paid too much for those players though and got us in trouble year after year.
I always said when Lenagan took over that we may have to see a couple of years worth of bargain bin signings if we wanted to stop players and their agents taking us for a ride after that. We've been seen for a long while now as a meal ticket for players and that had to stop, i presume that now were not viewed as being that meal ticket anymore, especially given your last comment.
Hopefully from now on though he'll gradually start to raise the bar in terms of quality and salaries of the players he brings in, within reason, so that we can start getting a better of quality of player in again but without paying over the odds for them.
I think the Gleeson signing was the first sign that his transfer policy may be on the change.

I know every signing can't be world class but in O'Carroll, Prescott and Coley we've already got players better than Griffin!!! There is no point in signing him
We aren't trying to sign 10 or 15 world class players we only need 2.
We have the wages to do it and nothing will do apart from two top players for next season imo.
I've been IL staunchest supporter but if he fails to deliver a top class prop and a top class HB in the pre season he will have lost one of his major dwindling fans.
NO IF’S OR BUTS ABOUT IT IL YOU ARE THE CHAIRMAN OF WIGAN RL. THE MOST FAMOUS CLUB IN THE WORLD AND WE NEED PLAYERS WHO FIT OUT BILLING.

I'd rather keep Coley then sign Griffin aswell but i don't believe theres much between them. Either would do me but only as 4th choice prop.
I like everybody else knows that we need a top draw halfback and prop but with Hock now being out of the picture we probably need another forward aswell.
I just don't see us getting 3 world class players in because i don't believe theres 3 world class players available at the moment.
If we can get the 2 we really need and a couple of squad players maybe a new coach could get the best out of them.

| The Hock situation could present a silver lining in that we can give players like Mossop & Farrell more game time and free up cap space for a world class half back & prop.
I think Farrell has the potential to be better than Hock, and has the advantage of having a brain as well. Just a shame he's ginger and that his chance could come because of this.

True but you still must admit its disapointing to lose such a good player, we could see something good from it though, or are we clutching at straws?

Of course it's a blow, but we have been wondering for a long time whether it was going to be another Briscoe type situation, where there was a top class player unable to break into the first team because the position was already filled with strong players.
At the end of the day we have to look past this, and I see the opportunity to allow Flanagan and Farrell some first team action a good thing, ignoring the way that the opportunity arose.

The oppurtunity is sitting there for the likes of Flanagan/Mossop/Farrell to cement their place in the first team. Whoever actually is the Head Coach at Wigan now has a very difficult decision to make regarding those players IMO.

Under Nobles safety first regime he ranks the oldest as the best so Flanagan would get first crack followed by Mossop and then Farrell but from what little i've seen of them it should be the opposite way round.
Liam Farrell should get any opportunites that come up this season and then next year he should be first in the pecking order out of those 3 with Mossop 2nd in line and Flanagan bringing up the rear.
