| Quote ="Pemps"I genuinely don't get the love in surrounding Pat. He's a good kicker and he's consistent. I can't remember him taking a game by the scruff of the neck and winning it for us like Farrell, Sam, Barrett, Newton, Lam, Paul, Gregory....
Don't get me wrong, he's a good player but he's a winger. Probably one of the top ones in SL but a winger none the less and one that wouldn't get a game in Origin.'"
I agree. Never underestimate a quality kicker as a goal is half a try, but Pat isn't as special otherwise as a lot on here would have u believe. He would be in my team though.

| The best players I’ve seen in a Wigan shirt (watching since 1980).
1. Brett Kenny
2. Ellery Hanley
3. Trent Barrett
4. Shaun Edwards
5. Andy Farrell
Only IMO before you all start disagreeing. (Could be a good topic for a new thread.)Trent was top class for me, but in a poor side. If we had him today I would be creaming my jeans. Seriously.
Hoffman wouldn’t make it into my top 10. But that’s not to say he’s a poor player, he is an excellent addition. It’s a bit too early to judge, but he does seem to be an astute signing. He is player of the season thus far (see our votes) in a good team, that’s all we can say at the minute.
Lima has disappointed, but hasn’t had as many games so still too early to judge.(He was excellent pre season v Wire hence the disappointment – missed far too many tackles on Sun).

Andy Farrell was better than Barrett for Wigan IMO. Comfortably.

Possibly, it’s very, very debatable. Barrett was class, but only for 2 seasons. Farrell did it over a sustained period. Saying that BK only did 1 season and left a lasting impression on me and lots of other Wiganers.

He was class for a lot less than 2 seasons.
Had some cracking games, but rivalled Leon in the hide and seek stakes at times. Can barely remember him playing against Saints.
Farrell WAS Wigan for a number of years, brilliant player and one I'd have in my team before Barrett any day of the week.

I'd add Gregory, Lam and Furner to that list too. Brett Kenny is the best player to have played for Wigan in my lifetime but not necessarily the most influencial in his time. The same could be said for Barrett.
For me the best players who just happen to have played for Wigan are in this order.
1. Kenny
2. Hanley
3. Gregory
4. Barrett
5. Renouf
As for best performances and influence in a Wigan shirt
1. Hanley
2. Edwards
3. Farrell
4. Gregory
5. Lam
I think we really got the best years out of those 5 and that's why they would be classed as Wigan Legends rather than Legends who happen to have played for Wigan.

Why not? I'd say they wern't too far apart talent wise. What makes the difference is Farrell's consistancy over so many years for the same club.
Trent Barrett was, on his day, one of the best half backs I've ever seen and was the best player in SL in 2007. I honestly think we'd walk the league if he was in our current team and we weren't hit so hard by injuries.

Your comments about Hoffman are similar to those you will hear said about O'Donnell at the Giants. World class back rowers who get through a mountain of work. If I can get my claret and gold goggles off tonight it will be a pleasure to watch Hoffman play.

As just a winger then yes Dallas and Carney are both quality but Pat offers his kicking and has much better defence than Dallas or Carney. He can also play full-back much better than either of those two could and he is alot stronger and scores a lot of tries those two never could.
Pat was awesome last season and nobody was more consistant so he deserved MOS, if it was on ability alone then Lockers or Sam would have taken it.

As I said before IMO Barrett was class in NRL and had the skills but some days you didnl;t even notice he was on the pitch. I honestly think he chose when he wanted to play and unfortunately for us he didn't have enough want and passion to play for Wigan.
Faz was Wigan through and through AND had the talent.

Lockers should have got MOS in my opinion. Carney scored many a try that Richards couldn't have scored. Leeds in the playoffs? Nothing wrong with Dallas' defence at all. I also don't really like Pat at fullback. Defensively good but offers nothing in attack that a modern fullback, Tomkins, Roberts, Phelps, Greenshields, Slater, Minichello...., should offer.
it sounds like I don't rate him but I really do think he's a good winger but apart from his goal kicking I don't think we're missing him that much. I mentioned this when a thread was started by Hogan regarding a new contract for him. I'd love him to stay but I get the impression that some on here would pay him the earth to sign on again.

I understand your point, some see him as a special player, some see him as a very very good winger.
I think we missed his defence in the WCC he is never out of position, he is never lazy with his line speed which many wingers are guilty of.
