Talking to my mate who's a ref the other day and he said that the Penalty Try/Red card is under review by the reffing committee.

Apparently Kendall has re-written the rulebook as it should have been a either a Penalty try OR a red card. Both should not have been given as you can't double penalise someone.

I'm not so sure on this but it sounds like it makes sense and could be true. Genuinley though, can anyone here recall a player being shown red and a penalty try being given at the same time? or maybe someone who's more clued up with the rules of the game. It didn't seem like an untoward decision to me to award both

It seems a bit odd to me to rule out the possibility of both a sending off and a penalty try being awarded. There are obviously different degrees of foul that can occur. So a professional foul such as tackling the player off the ball as an example or what we saw here where the players head is nearly taken off. It seems a bit perverse to me Hill ought not to have been red carded after that and equally given he had been, why then Wigan would not have been awarded the penalty try.

He can give the try & Send the player off

He also explained the charge down thing to me - There is a little more to it than Just the ball rising

Player brings the ball into contact and promotes the non-ball carrying arm towards the chest of opponent with open hand. Arm bounces up and makes contact on the throat. Worthy of onfield penalty.

Smithies
Player’s hand is in the vicinity of opponent’s face in the tackle. Any contact to opponent’s eye area or gouging motion inconclusive on footage. Club submits no additional information to assist.

The refs and RFL are all Wigan fans.

Your friend is getting confused with you not sin binning for a professional foul and awarding a penalty try (you do one or the other). So for example if French had been awarded the penalty try, Cooper wouldn't have been binned on top of it - he's not done anything dangerous and is punished enough by the penalty try. Foul play worthy of a red card is dangerous so will always get a red card assuming it's picked up, otherwise the players aren't being protected.

There's also no such thing as a reffing committee

By 'reffing committee' I mean the review sessions all refs do of their game as a group. I don't know the official wording, but committee seemed the right thing to use.
