He has already approached former Super League coaches about potential backroom positions for next year I know that.

Wane or Lenagan?
I'd heard Lee Briers name mentioned.

Wane has. Spoken personally to a coach currently out of work with regards to joining next year. I believe if Leuluai retires then the coaching job goes to Leuluai. If he plays again then the job is going to the chap Wane has in mind.

I've heard he's spoken to Duffy and that they gave him a tour of the facilities a few weeks back.
No idea if it's true & it came from a current academy lad, so no reason to doubt it.

Whilst he's a former player, is "new ideas" not what Lam was brought over for? He's not played, or been involved with the club for 20 years or so.
People calling for this white knight from the NRL have Madge tinted specs on. For every Madge & Holbrook, there's even more like Lam, Price, Furner etc.

| Wane might be going back to an ex coach but he’d be anything but going backwards IMO. I want a proven winner in charge and he’s just that.

Lam was brought in to be the stop gap before Edwards for a year. You have to ask why he's still here.

It's a lazy, comfy, appointment that is why the club has gone backwards at the alarming rate it has over the past few years.
The whole club needs an absolute rocket up its backside starting with Lam and Radlinski going. If Wane replaces Radlinski ok - if Wane is going to be coach in all but name we won't move on as we need to.

But again he’ll be anything but lazy, the players will be anything but lazy and it won’t be a comfortable environment for anyone. I know that’s not what you’re saying and I agree on some scores that we shouldn’t keep going back to ex players or members of the coaching staff but this isn’t any old player or assistant coach, conditioner etc, this is the man who dealt with the injury crisis that Lam has, dealt with numerous player exits like Lam has had to and blooded loads of kids like Lam has but he won things, plenty of things.
I’m basing me wanting him back on the assumption that any new man would need to work with what he’s given regards coaching staff, back room staff etc. We won’t get that full clean sweep people think we need, a new man wouldn’t be able to lay off every coach and member of the back room staff and bring in their own men, as that is not how Lenagan does things, so if we’re going to keep going down this route of hiring from within and promoting from within, then there is no better man than Wane to oversee that IMO. If somebody said to be it’s a blank canvas and a new man gets an open cheque book to do what he wants with his staff, than great, let’s get in a totally new man but we know they won’t get that.

From what I’ve heard radders will only be in charge of the marketing and other duties that come with a director (which you can’t really knock him for) Waney will take charge of the buying of players and similar duties. To me with the right coach in place we could be on to a winner. I think Waney knows what he wants in a player and hopefully with input from others could bring the right players in.

I agree we can't get a full clean sweep in one go, but we sure as hell can be ready and planning to get replacements when people's contracts are up. It feels like 2009 again when we need to identify a coach with new ideas and get the club out of the malaise it has got itself into. Our rivals are moving on and trying to get some enthusiasm into their clubs as we start to come out of Covid. If we carry on as we are, people who have got out of the habit of going to games are not going to have good reason to come back.
Like I said if Wane is to replace Radlinski ok, but this incessant looking back at the club is not how you move forward.

I can’t see huge changes in how we do things until such a time Lenagan himself walks away. In that case it takes a pretty special coach to deal with how we do things (promoting from within of players and coaches, regular exits of our best players etc) and whilst Wane may be a comfort blanket of a choice, I can’t think of anybody who I’d have full faith in to make those circumstances work.

I'm hoping that tomorrows fans forum is an honest (as promised) and frank communication between both supporters and club officials that leaves no relevant questions unanswered. I'm talking everything from IL's future plans to the clubs intentions over the next season or two.
If the club draw a massive line in the sand, put plans in place to recover and rebuild. Put in procedures for improvement both on and off the field then I think most supporters will support this.
Try and pull the wool over fans faces with a fake forum and it will do more harm than good, especially regarding much needed 2022 seasons ticket and merchandise revenue.
I do believe the forum should be recorded and delayed footage released (24hrs at the latest). A live stream could expose embarrassing comments which neither the club nor supporters need at this moment in time.

I have no argument about that.
All I'm saying/doing is offering up a bit of caution for the people looking for a magic NRL wand that will solve all of our issues.
Lam had, on paper, the type of CV that many on here would love us to now sign. Part of a few successful NRL systems, head coach experience at PNG and he was the assistant manager for Australia when they won the World Cup.

I agree - NRL does not always = good. The club need to take their time, do their homework and due diligence and make sure the right appointment is made. Maybe the club are doing that and will surprise us all, but I have to say the last few years don't give me much hope at the moment.

I think you would get long odds on it being someone other than Peet, those rumours are too strong. Maybe half a chance of Wane till the end of the season first but I don't believe that one to be honest.

Great point.
It’s not easy to “get a Madge” type coach as people make out.
I can’t get my head round people not wanting Wane back, I really can’t.

Without a shadow of a doubt.
Personally I hope that they club do that due diligence and they decide that Peet is the best man. If anyone has served an apprenticeship and deserves a shot, then it's Peet.
You look at the top coaches in the modern game and, invariably, each learnt at the knee of a great. Wane was a very successful coach, you can't get away from that. Peet, imo, deserves the chance that say a Bellamy got when he moved away from Bennett, or Madge got when he moved here. There's definitely a reluctance to "pull the trigger" with British coaches and that needs to change.

| I'm of the opinion that the coaching team definitely needs some fresh ideas and would benefit from someone new coming in but I don't think it needs to be the head coach. Sure, Lam theoretically should have brought some fresh ideas to the side but you have to wonder how much research and homework was actually done before he was appointed, and how much was simply down to him being Radlinski's favourite ex-teammate and someone willing to be in charge for just a year. Any new idea won't help - we need good ideas!
I doubt there are many coaches that are genuinely good at every aspect of a head coach role. It makes sense that it's a team effort and that the assistant coaches can often play a big part. Matty Peet seems to be primarily our defensive coach and our defence got noticeably worse after he left and noticeably better when he returned. Even now our defence seems to be okay. Peet seems to be doing that job well. If he can pick the right players, motivate them, make the right decisions during a game then he can be a good head coach. But if he is to be head coach I think we definitely need to bring in a new assistant that can focus on the attacking aspects of the game.

| Something which really irritates me regarding people who slate Wane is the fact he gets zero credit for games (and there were plenty of them) in which we played some very good rugby.
I'm not just talking end of seasons either nor am I just talking 2012. Some people seemingly love to critique those games and hammer Wane for instances where we won by grinding out results or when occasionally a really poor result would occur but those criticising never offset that by praising the excellent rugby we played time and time again during his tenure.
I really enjoyed some of the stuff we played under Shaun and although it may be an extremely unfashionable thing to say for some, it certainly isn't for me.
You only have to listen to the Out of Your League podcast with Sam Tomkins to get a feel for how Wane operates and how he drives standards upwards. I've also heard stories of when he became head coach how he'd insist on small things like everyone speaking to the coach driver when getting on and off especially to say thank you when exiting the coach. I love that sort've stuff.

| Wane is a big yes from me as long as he doesn't conflict with whoever will be head coach. Can Wane work at Wigan and not be head coach? I think it could be a conflict of interest. I would assume he will stay on as England coach for another year so he can have a crack at the world cup but can he have his hand in without wanting to control it all?
