Is it as simple as 'win nowt you're out' though?
Unless we are terrible from the start of the season right through to the end it doesn't give IL/KR much time to look for, approach and seal a deal with a solid replacement.

Say we perform well through the season, lose the cup final then get into the playoffs but lose the GF (costing Lam his new one year extension). Only gives us three months to secure a replacement, unless feelers are put out in advance? What's the chances of a decent replacement being available in such a short window of time as well?

So winning the league leaders shield is not rated as an achievement in Lenagan's eyes. Not sure if he rates the challenge cup, so Mr Lam, "we win the Grand Final, or on yer bike !" Nice....

He does rate the Challenge Cup, said on many times its a prestigious trophy that the club has a long history with. It also brings in a lot more revenue (under normal circumstances) than winning the GF.

I think if we go out of the cup in a respectable performance against Saints/Wire/Leeds then he keeps his job but the application process begins at that point, he can apply too. That way we could have all the interviews done and dusted before the play offs, and make the decision straight after the season is done.

Having said that, I remember Noble announcing he was leaving straight after we went out of the play offs in 09. I don't know whether that was because IL made the decision before that point (thus knowing he was getting rid of a coach who may win the Grand Final), or whether they had an understanding that his contract wouldn't be renewed unless Wigan won the Grand Final.

I'm not sure why people are feeling sorry for Lam?

ATEOTD he's got the job and all he has to do to keep it, is to be successful - that's what being the head coach at Wigan is all about.

IL isn't an idiot. If we get loads of injuries, then he'll factor that in. If Lam makes us a success then he'll keep his job.

Will be interesting how he manages a squad that is out of balance particularly if we get a few injuries in the three quarters.

Interesting that Lam has not been linked with any NRL clubs as far as I know, we all know that is what he wants.

Happy with one year, we have been very good at times but question marks still remain not excluding our signings although how much of an input Lam has is not clear.

At the risk of going off on a tangent; until the RFL get their house in order and make it so players and coaches want to stay in SL, the talent drain will continue.

Yep, I know we were in the minority in saying that Lam was not the right man for the head coaches job at Wigan and to get so close to winning the GF last year really surprised me but ultimately that loss came down to another dumb decision and we are seeing more and more of it.

I fear that the players have stopped playing for him.

Lam is totally and utterly out of his depth. He went with the structure and makeup of the squad and has been found wanting repeatedly when it matters

IL won’t but get shut but bring forward the plan to put Goulding in charge.

I’m all for getting shut now but putting Goulding in charge? It’ll be a Winder/Peet caretaker until we get a permanent coach.

Personally I think he’s had a difficult job with the cards that have been dealt. As for our head coach for next year I believe we should be looking at different options but I don’t see the point of getting rid of a better replacement is not available.
