Does it matter? His work rate when on the pitch was awful, as pointed out by his 2.67 metres per carry.

| When comparing one player's stats with another of course minutes on the field matter.
Anyway, back to John Bateman.
As it appears that Lockers is out for the Broncos game, in the Brisbane thread each team mentioned has JB at loose. Natural selection by us fans, I wonder how Waney will look at it?

| Bateman will be at 13 I reckon. He went there on Friday didn't he? And I think he'll be Lockers long term replacement.
Looking forward to seeing what he can do.

| I think Farrell is missing his supply of 'short ball from Green'
While I admit it was overused, it was good for at least one bust per game

| Quote ="Wigg'n"Good bit of spin I guess. That's probably why Patrick made a massive 17 tackles then, the same number as Sam Powell.'"
To be fair that was about the same as our other props, who made between 15 and 20 tackles. The only real stand outs were Bateman (30) and L.Farrell (27). C.Farrell (4) stands out at the other end of the scale because he wasn't on long. Regardless of any of that Patrick still needs to offer more in attack than he has done in his first two outings. 10 carries for 31 metres over 2 games is absolutely pitiful.

| I was quite critical of Bateman during pre season for his limited style of play but have to admit he has put me firmly in my place.
Really looking forward to the next few weeks to hopefully seeing more of the same from him.

| He's quick and agile. Has good hands. Plays hard.
But he was going nowhere against Brisbane's big guys today. He just doesn't possess the brute force traction.
If Wane is going to persist with him in the back three, he'd better make sure the other two can make forward progress when it becomes all about raw power.

The only place Bateman will be going is to an NRL team when IL gets the right price.

And I wouldn't blame the lad one bit, same goes for when Sam Tomkins left. Any lad of that age would be crazy not to go to Australia on double maybe treble the money they earn here.

| Just seen some stats on the NRL site from the game-
Bateman
150 metres
62 tackles
Faz
152 metres
44 tackles
Clubb
126 metres
29 tackles
Some other outstanding efforts by both centres as well. Some of the props stats are again a real worry though! Crosby made 30 metres and Patrick and Sutton around 50. It highlights our need to get Mossop and Flower back!

I wish there was a stat that could highlight the impact of a players tackle in G Force.
Think Tony Clubb would be topping the charts this week after some of the monster hits he was putting in.
Mind you, our 14st skinny little John Bateman put some humdingers in as well
I know the guys wear the GPS unit now adays. Might only be a mateer of time before metrics like impact are available

The team stats say all we need to know really, not just in the context of Wigan v Brisbane, but SL v NRL. 18 errors for us vs 13 for them. 65% completion v 81% completion and the fact that we had to make 100 more tackles despite only having 3 less sets in possession.

Spot on. You can't make basic errors Vs top quality opposition.

Amazing effort from the guy and what a start to the season he's made. A shoe in for England selection at the moment.

| Is it me or do the stats seem inflated? Surely we didn't have seven players clocking up over 100m (two approaching 200m) when we only had one break all game and only completed 65% of our sets. I know Burgess went about 80m for his try but 194m still seems a bit high. Charnley is at 120m and I barely remember him touching the ball!

I know something about how these stats are produced and you wouldn't be surprised to know that they are to be taken with a large pinch of salt.
They are mostly done straight after the game by a fairly young person, most probably a student, who doesn't mind working into the night. They are often football fans who watch a bit of rugby as a second sport. The statistician will watch the game over on a monitor and just compile the stats as they go along. They might not recognise a player, not being familiar with a particular team. Some players who are more recognisable get other players stats through error.
The tackle thing is a minefield. When is someone credited with a tackle? As third man in for example when they've barely touched the attacker? Often the camera angle won't show up who missed the tackle so they just guess. The other season Faz went about twelve games without missing a tackle, which was ridiculous.
And you are right about the yardage too. Anyone watching the game would be staggered how those metres could add up.
The whole process is far from being scientific. A lot of guesswork is involved and human error is massive. Furthermore, how are these things checked? There just isn't the time or the inclination for someone to sit up all night and do a 100% check.

Clubb's been taken off injured the last two games and is heavily strapped up.
I wouldn't be surprised if he's taking one for the team and playing whilst injured - Wane is using him sparingly as a result. He's been our standout Prop this year.
As for Bateman - I think he can be added to the Green/Smith/Sarginson/Clubb group when people argue that we rely too much on the Academy and recruit poorly.
He's our best player at the moment and as the talent to be a world beater.
