I'm not getting into name-calling (you've marked your card quite successfully yourself on that count). But if you take a look at the RFL's definitions in the disciplinary guidelines ([urlhttp://media.therfl.co.uk/docs/On%20Field%20Compliance%20Sentencing%20Guidelines%202014-Final.pdf[/url) then you might understand the punishment (but I won't hold my breath).

I have thicker skin than my life partner Terri, but Zak Hardaker's comments and comments from "omofobes" like you on messageboards and terraces will discourage her from attending matches with me and our adopted child. This will only harm RL in the long run through a smaller fanbase.

| Quote ="Pie Eyed"Whilst I don't agree with his (zntryes') homophobic comment, I do agree with the underlying sentiment.
I have never understood haw calling someone a rude name carries a FAR harsher penalty than striking, head-shots, etc. - Dangerous and potentially career-ending stuff carries much the same penalties (5-6 matches).
It's not just in our sport. Luis Suarez was given 10 matches for "probably" using some form of racist language, in an argument that took place in Spanish, between a Uruguayan and a French-man, in England, despite no other member of either team hearing either of them call the other anything out of order.
Compare this to the regular 3-matches that are handed out for leg-breaking tackles (maybe 4-5 if it's EXTREMELY bad) and I wonder how they reach these conclusions?
I agree that racism has no place on the field (at least overt racism, as a recent study found that basically everybody is racist to a greater or lesser degree), but how the hell can calling someone a "fag" (as crass as that may be), carry a greater punishment than some of the physical assaults that we have seen in previous years?'"
Well said that man or woman. Massive overreaction to a bit of name calling and this is my view on most so called racist or homophobic incidents. I am prepared for the inevitable PC backlash that this opinion will create with those who actually believe that Zak Hardaker has committed a hate crime. Plainly ridiculous over exaggeration IMO. Too many are being tarred with either a racist or homophobic brush, to an extent that I believe actually harms the rightful efforts to stamp out true racism or homophobia.

How interesting that you should use racist terminology to express yourself.

| Racist terminology? In your opinion! Do you know enough about the origins of the phrase or are you just assuming you know? In which case I think you are being a tad racist!

| heard an interview with McDermott last night on the way back.
I think that they way Leeds, the RFL and Hardaker have handled this has been excellent.
This is one of the aeas where the sport carries itself with dignity and can be proud of its internal policing.
Football can learn a lot about our disciplinary attitudes, codes or practice and structures eg the fact that all matters are dealt with so promptly
well done everyone.
Lets hope this can now be left to a bit of banter in the terraces and slowly fade into a distant memory.

The club have handled the situation in a very professional manner, clubs and fans need to consider the bigger picture before defending players actions when they are obviously guilty of an offence, well done the Rhinos

How is that racist? As far as I am aware it stems from nautical origins. If you're referring to 'tar and feather' (which would be incorrect anyway) that's also not racist as it was something whites did to other whites and so has no connection to racism whatsoever.
In fact you could say that it's more interesting that you immediately jumped to the racist angle here, even when there was none. Sort of backs up what the poster was saying in the first place...

No it's not. Racist and homophobic comments are banned. If a player can't sledge a member of of the opposition without resorting to racist or homophobic comments they are just thick. They know the rules and whether you agree with them or not its pretty simple to avoid breaking them. There are plenty of other ways to wind the opposition up.

But should the punishment for being thick be as harsh as a spear tackle? This, plus the "hate crime" OTT comments and the misguided who think Baa Baa Black Sheep should be banned are what rub me up the wrong way (rub me up? Am I allowed to say that? Who knows these days?).

No one has ever thought that BBBS should be banned. It was a fabrication by the Daily Mail to discredit left wing councils in the mid eighties. The lie was carried on for decades by the right wing press and swallowed by gullible idiots like you.

To be honest what rubs you up the wrong way is irrelevant. Under its current deal, RL is picking up somewhere in the region of £17m from Sport England over the current 4-year funding period. That money is intended to develop the game, largely by recruiting as many people as possible to the sport. Then, along comes a clown like Hardaker with his pathetic playground taunts. At a stroke this potentially isolates the sport from a large segment of the population. Face up to it, in addition to gays there are swathes of the public who simply won't tolerate their kids being brought up with homophobic values. Then there's our sponsors who are at the end of the day trying to flog their products. This type of crap won't sit easily with them either.
So, quite apart from the direct offence caused by racist and homophobic abuse, our sport has a lot riding on matters like this. The RFL was right to ban Hardaker and Leeds are 100% correct in ensuring he puts in a stint working with a gay RL team in Leeds (which, incidentally, I'm told Hardaker was grateful to be given the opportunity to do in order to make amends to those he caused offence to). The reason they've done this is because they recognise how immensely harmful this can be to the sport - far greater than anything that passes as a "spear tackle" as seen in the modern game.

It was probably a bad choice of words on my part suggesting simple stupidity would be the reason someone would resort to racist or homophobic comments. I don't believe there is a pro RL player in the UK who doesn't know that is a line you don't cross including Hardaker before he got done for it. So to be clear by "thick" I mean stupid enough to knowingly break a rule, not "thick" born of ignorance. So the ban fits for me.
