It wasn't, doesn't mean I havn't seen countless DVD's and videos of both players. IMO Gregory was the ultimate half back. As I said though, Edwards record speaks for itself and is hard to argue with.

| Dallas v Carney - Dallas every day of the week but id take Robinson over both
Lockers v Faz - Faz because he played multiple positions extremely well

Seen it, about 500 times.
And Gregory's performance in 1989 CC final wins that award hands down IMO.

Id also argue with this, reading ex players books and watching games myself, iv never seen or heard of a player take a team around pitch like Gregory did. Just my opinion.

| Faz v Lockers, Its gotta be faz everytime surely? Lockers commitment to wigan cannot be doubted and he is a great player but faz was the greatest leader I've ever seen (baring in mind I only started watching in around 2000) Whenever wigan where down he would be the one fighting to get through the line, screaming at the players either rollocking or organising. Will never forget the leeds game where he came back on with a broken nose and bandage round his head. and he was a superb kicker aswell.

| Gregory was one of the most talented players I've seen. Edwards success was down to talent but mainly his work ethic. If Gregory had Edwards' level of professionalism he'd have been the best player in the world. Greg could win games on his own but he could also lose games. As talented as Gregory was, if I had to have one in a modern era team it would be Edwards.

This notion that Edwards was only ever a support player astounds me.
Edwards' field kicking was pin perfect, his passing was fabulous. He had vision.
The Big difference for me was that Edwards was a total professional with complete and utter focus on his game. He studied the game and made himself good at it.
Gregory on the other hand was a very natural, seat of your pants type player.
Had both Edwards and Gregory studied and trained the same, it's frightening to think how good Gregory could have been.

I didn't say he was. I said he was more of a support player, Gregory was more of a classy half back with a natural rugby brain.

| Edwards could play scrum half, stand off and full back to an equal level of brilliance. Gregory was an out and out scrum half. Edwards for me for the reasons outlined above.
Went to a sportsmans dinner and Greg was speaking. He was asked which was his favourite game of his career and said 'that's easy, when we beat Saints 29-0 at Wembley'! Quick as a flash a Saints fan shouted it was 27 not 29! Gregory started laughing and said ' oh that's right, I often forget our score but I never forget yours'! The cheer was deafening!!!

Watch utube and have a looka t the Lancs Cup final v Oldham and note Edwards part in the long distance Lydon try.
Greg was a great attacking player (when he wanted to be) but wasn't that good defensively, and didn't have Edwards kicking or leadership skills. There's more to the game than attack and that's exactly why the Aussies are better than us, they realise the importance of defence.'"
So why were the Aussies more impressed with Greg?

| One area where we've generally had stability in the Wigan club is fullback.
How about Tyrer v Fairbairn v Hampson v Radlinski v Tomkins. Feel free to jump in where your watching started. For mine they all have areas where they are better than the rest; I would say the early years Fairbairn edges it at the moment; he was proven at test level and excelled in a generally poor Wigan team. I do expect Sam to surpass him in the next few years.

| How's about Dave Furner vs Ryan Hoffman?
I'd go Hoffman I think. He's obviously fresh in the memory but he was superb for us last year. Both he and Furner have had good test careers but the Hoff would edge it for me due to his attacking threat. He runs great lines and busts defences open more then Furner did whilst for me being as tough in the tackle and as hardworking as Furner.
Both cracking players mind.

The aim of the game nowadays is to win at all costs and that's why I'd want Edwards in my team over Gregory (if we're saying they're vying for the same position). For viewing pleasure Greg over Edwards every time for me. Criminal waste of talent at times.
Dallas over Carney. Slow start from Brian if I remember rightly and Dallas had a better general rugby league mind. Not surprising seeing as Carney came to the game at a much later age.
For me Lockers is greatly underrated in this country. I genuinely think he's world class and has proved myself and many others wrong in his role as captain. Having said all that Faz was Faz. A club legend who lead us and Great Britain at just 21 years of age.
