Gareth Widdop? Yippee.
Why don't we stick with Sam Tomkins - the bloke who's been setting the league alight in that position despite only having a few games experience there?

Agreed. If we talk to friends in Aus, Widdop hasn't really done that much or caught too many headlines.
I'm a bit worried by how excited he's making some of us.
I mean, do we still think he'll be a shoe-in for the England full-back shirt now that Sam has made that position his own?

| If it is an overseas signing, Id expect Roberts to be on his way, perhaps to that Aussie club in exchange?

Given the fact that Danny McGuire, Leon Pryce and Kyle Eastmond are going to be missing I see little choice but to play Sam at stand off and Gareth Widdop at fullback.
Had the three above been fit then it could have been a completely different story.

Sams just as good at 6 though. If it comes to a choice between having Sam at FB and having one of the old guard at 6 for England (Pryce, Mcguire etc) then i'd rather have Sam at 6 and Widdop at FB.
The lad obviously has some talent so why not give him a chance to shine. Nothing to lose have we.

| I agree re Injuries. Cant see how it will be anything but:
1 Widdop
6 Sam
7 Myler/Burrow

Don't ask me why but I have a sneaky suspicion that McBanana will play Sinfield at 6 and Sam at 7. Burrow and Myler have both been cack this year and Sinfield did a pretty good job kicking Leeds around the park this year when Burrow was injured. Plus Sam has played more games at scrum half for England than he has at stand-off, not that it makes a whole lot of difference these days

That's not a bad shout IMO. Kevin Sinfield's kicking game is excellent & I think this would compliment Sam Tomkins in the halves. Just our options then at hooker look a bit grim - James Roby, Shaun Lunt and Matt Diskin.

If he picks Sinfield at 6, we need not bother, but I suppose he needs to find a place for him, he certainly wont get in at 13.

Could Roby not just do 80 minutes?

Widdop has to play in the halves, where he has been playing most of his second grade rugby and where he will start for the Storm next year.

| It's strange how we started this season saying that the England coach would be spoiled for choice in the halves, and yet now there's only really one who we feel certain will not let us down.
I appreciate that injuries have a played a part here - particulary with McGuire, who should be the automatic no. 6. But even if the others were fit, Pryce has never impressed internationally, we haven't seen enough of Eastmond recently to work out whether he's international standard or not, and Myler seems to have dropped off the planet.

I'd rather see him in the halves than Burrow. At least we'd have some semblance of a kicking game. Burrow doesn't seem to have recovered from that knee injury he had at the start of the season

| I was told about a month ago by a mate who was out in Aus that he had heard we were in for Anthony Minichello! I have no link or source and I don't think he does either it was just what he had heard. I'd forgotten all about it and was very sceptical until I saw this thread mention a possible fullback signing. I can't see it happening tho and think it would be a wasted signing, we would be better off going for a new hooker. Surely he would command large wages and is a luxury we can do without.

| With Sam, Pat and Amos fullback is the last position we need to sign.
However if we could get William Slater on a 1 year loan deal while Melbourne sort out their salary cap troubles i would play Sam at prop in 2010..

| Minichello. No thanks. 5 years ago, but not now. I would be happy with a top 9 or Widdop to come in and form a halves partnership with Finch.
